Feedback on lead responses

Dear FreeIndex Members.

We have had feedback from several of you over the past few months which has led us to try and improve the feedback you get from responding to leads.

Basically the issue was that businesses were responding to leads and giving quotes and then not hearing anything back as to whether their quote was any good, and if not, why not.

We think we have now addressed this by asking users a few simple questions when they close their Quote Request. Users are asked to specify which company they chose and why, (or why they did not choose a company) at the end of the process. We then email that information to all the businesses that quoted on the job to try and provide some insight on who is winning the jobs and why.

Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee that you will get one of these emails if you quote on a job, as not all users bother to close their quote request, and there really is not much we can do about this. However we believe a majority will provide this feedback.

Now it's easier than ever for your customers to write reviews

Also, we have recently made it easier for your customers to write reviews. Everything needed to write a review and register an account is now all on one screen and we have noticed an increase in the number of reviews being written since we put these changes live last week.

We hope you're enjoying the hot weather.

Best regards,
The FreeIndex Team

We get no inquiries that lead us to believe that FI is the source even though we have loads of reviews - ie 4th in the country in a very competitive market. No complaints though as we link directly from our website to FI and business for us is very very local.

I've received a number of irrelevant enquiries for services which we don't offer, however there are 2 enquiries from earlier this year which I have just noticed, one of which was relevant, but now a bit too late to respond to. Strangely the irrelevant enquiries have been forwarded, but not the other 2 which I would have responded to. I had forgotten about the Free index listing!

Hi Barry, We do not believe that the "vast majority" of our users are generally not happy with our service. We receive very positive feedback from our members every day to let us know that they have gained customers through our site and that FreeIndex is benefiting their business. Some of the testimonials which we have received can be read at this link:

http://www.freeindex.co.uk/testimonials.htm

Those businesses which have taken the time to create a high quality profile page and have correctly set up their lead alert settings are much more likely to get enquiries and leads from potential customers through our site. We're always happy to help anyone who would like assistance with setting up their profile on our site - we can be reached by clicking on the "Support" link at the foot of the page, then clicking on the option marked "Raise a support ticket".

Thanks and best wishes from the FreeIndex team.

Hello all. Those of you who are saying that you do not get any leads through our site - most of you have only selected between 1 and 3 lead alert categories, which will limit how many lead alerts you receive. If you select more lead alert categories - and you can choose up to 10 - then the chances that you will get alerts for new leads posted on our site will increase. You can select more lead alert categories by going to your Dashboard and clicking on the option marked "Lead Alert Settings". Hope that's helpful.

It would be nice if people could write more than one review. I have several clients who use my services on more than one occasion and have expressed that they have been unable to leave a second review.

I can understand why its to stop people flooding one site with endless reviews to bump up the rating. But I think it would be nice for people looking for a firm to do work for them to see that they have used the company more than once. May be some way of adding a rating system on the number of times you have used a company as opposed to adding new reviews.
27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi David, Sorry but we can't allow customers to write more than one review for the same business on our site, even if they have used that business more than once. Your customers can always add to their original review to show that they are a repeat customer if they want. Thanks for the suggestion about adding a rating system for number of times the customer has used that business, which we'll take into consideration. All the best from the FreeIndex Team.
27 Jul 2015
John Farrell from
magnetikmedia Ltd
As an idea why don't you allow people to leave as many reviews as they like on any given business but only count the first one against the overall star rating? Then a repeat customer could leave 50 reviews without skewing that businesses overall rating.

Hi David, You'll probably find that you get more lead alerts through our service if you select more than one lead alert category for your business. You can select up to 10 different categories for which you want to receive alerts from our site by logging in to your account, going to your Dashboard, and clicking on the option marked "Lead Alert Settings". Then just use the option provided on that page to add more categories for which you want to receive alerts. Hope that's helpful.

Hi David, Sorry to hear you're not happy. If you do feel like responding to any more leads which are sent to you from our site then you may find that you'll have more success if you provide the customer with a more detailed response about what you can offer and what you charge. Businesses which provide the most detailed responses tend to get the best results - not always, but often. Hope that's of some help.

27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi Rob, Sorry but we can't allow people to write more than one review for the same business on our site. If we did provide that option then some unscrupulous people would abuse the system to get lots of reviews from the same person and improve their position in search results just based on one customer's feedback, which would not be fair to other businesses. Your repeat customers can always add to their original review to show that they are a repeat customer if they want.

John Farrell from
magnetikmedia Ltd
@m Hussain - I doubt very much the fact you are a premium member or how many reviews you have make any difference to your Google position.

Google don't know of you're premium or what reviews you have, it wouldn't mean anything to them. Google will simply be looking at the content on your page so make sure your profile is full of relevant content.
27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi, John is quite correct - subscribing to our Premium service won't necessarily have any effect on your position in Google search results unfortunately. Also we don't have any direct control over which businesses from our site are shown in any particular searches carried out on Google. But please feel free to contact our support team if you have any questions about this or any other issue, via our contact form at www.freeindex.co.uk/contact.htm. Thank you.

My profile places me at the top of the list in my locality for my work. FreeIndex must be doing something right with regard to search engines because many new clients say they found me through the big G: it often turns out that what they actually found was my FreeIndex Profile. More often than not, that leads to good, revenue-generating work.

Antonello Canu from
Antonello Painting and Decorating
That is good initiative. Unfortunately most customers don't have an understanding of what a home improvement job entails, whether this be painting and decorating, plastering, brick laying etc. They think it is something you do in half a day and they expect to spend very little money for that. Of course the reality is different as a very good, honest job will take the time that it needs to take and charge the correct price. I also have to add that some "potential" customers ask for quotes knowing down well they haven't got the money to accept any of the quotes they receive; but ask many tradesmen in the hope that a miracle could happen and dream to pay £900 for painting the whole house. The morale is "you either have the money or you haven't". So that's why most of the time we charge high prices to filter out those who have the money and forget about the others. Sounds harsh but I think it is true.
16 Jul 2015
Sacha J A Blake from

A good idea. Reviews do help potential customers/clients in their search for professional, accredited and qualified tradesman. But reviews are a small part of a wider picture regards with a Business providing a service be it in, Gas engineer (Plumber), Electrician or Plasterer so forth. A good business website with relevant information backed up with portfolio of completed contracts, along with Industry qualification's and years spent on the job is highly relevant.
good for my customers is good for me, if ive had the job then i must be providing the quality service.

I think I agree with the previous comment: 'I wouldn`t want my competitors knowing why they didn`t get the work'.

Moreso because how informative is it? Pretty much every email I've had of this nature always say: 'detailed quote - response given' which in my industry is not possible unless it is someone just telling the client what they want to hear certainly not without a long chat on the phone or in person. Another regular one is 'competitive price', really again in my industry cheap is generally not good. I'm sure for lots of other trades the cheapest price works so so I guess most people think differently to me here.

I guess I just don't think an email telling me why I didn't get a job will help my future development unless it was detailed in relation to exactly why.
27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi John, Thanks for your helpful feedback about this new service. We do give customers an option to provide an in-depth report on their decision, which would then be sent on to the businesses which responded. However, because we don't want to put them off by asking for too much information, we have also allowed them to just select their response from a list of pre-set options. It's difficult to get exactly the right balance which will give you detailed information but which isn't so daunting for the customer that they won't bother at all, but we'll continue to develop the new system based on the feedback which we get. Thanks again.

If I`m winning works I wouldn`t want my competitors knowing why they didn`t get the work. Is this statement really fair “to try and provide some insight on who is winning the jobs and why”.

I don`t think it’s a good idea or legal, if you’re not getting the works after quoting change your approach.
27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi Paul, Thanks for the feedback. What we're trying to do is provide our business members with useful information on how they could change their approach in order to be more successful when providing a quote. It's easy to say that you should change your approach if you're not getting the work, but we feel it's more helpful to provide specific details of where you might be going wrong - or rather, what the successful businesses are doing in order to win the job.
27 Jul 2015
John Farrell from
magnetikmedia Ltd
I get the reason for the feedback but on sites like this (so not just free index) the reason businesses get the job probably 99% of the time is because the business that won the job has simply been the cheapest. I could respond with a ridiculously cheap price and get the job but there's no reason for me to do so.

So I understand the reason for your feedback and it is a good idea but I think it is a bit of a lost crusade.

I'm not being disrespectful at all as I'm doing a job currently for a customer via freeindex so it is a worthwhile site. I think people just need to realise you have to respond, respond and respond some more to leads then eventually you will get work. Its a law of averages, after all not EVERY person who posts a job is a time waster.

27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi Warren, We have simplified the whole process of writing a review on our website so customers only have to complete one form with their details. As soon as they've done that, we do give them very clear instructions to click on the link in the email they've been sent in order to publish their review. We also offer an option for customers to publish their review even if they haven't received an email from us. By the way, it looks like some of your customers have entered their email address incorrectly so that's why they would not receive any emails from us to publish their review. For more help with this type of issue please do contact our support team directly via the form provided at www.freeindex.co.uk/contact.htm. Many thanks.

Just had a read further down the comments left by others after my initial response and we do get good value from free-index and I don't want to diss the company.
I think we possibly do better than a lot on this site because we specialize in Repairs of conservatories and if someone has had an annoying leak sometimes for several months/years then it comes as a relief to find someone who can re-pair it and we kind of stand out.
I think it is a great idea for companies more specialized to have a break away heading to avoid being swamped/grouped with companies to which they would not want to win their type of work and vise versus.

As Lynn stated ( from Bakehouse Studio ) in her comment, I also was a free member for several years and used to get around 1 job inquiry a week at its peak. Since I changed to paid advertising ( over 12mths ago ) the amount of leads has dwindled to 1 every 2 mths if that ? I can't help thinking that the sites presence has somewhat been neglected / lost since more people are paying to advertise. Is less effort being put in by the great team of before to be at the top of each google search ? Does anyone else feel the same way ?
27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from

Hi, Thanks for your feedback. Sorry to hear you're not getting as many enquiries as previously. It's not something which we can directly control, unfortunately, because it depends on how many customers use our site to look for the services or products which you offer. But we do work very hard to maintain our presence in Google search results - we know how important this is and it is not an area which we would neglect for any reason.

I was a free member for a couple of years and used to get regular leads. I even secured a couple of jobs. So I upgraded to pro with the promise and expectation that this would increase. I spent a great deal of time and effort on my profile, and in encouraging my clients to leave reviews. Alas, since doing this, the number of leads I've received have dwindled to nothing. I have even resorted to listing a few other business services in other categories that are connected with, but not related to, my main business. I get a few leads from these more popular categories, but even when I follow up with emails, I don't seem to get any response. Favourable or otherwise. What has happened? Have I done something wrong, or has this website lost it's clout? I haven't had a lead from my main business category in months!
27 Jul 2015
FreeIndex Team from
FreeIndex Ltd
Hi Lynn, Sorry to hear you haven't received as many leads as you expected. It doesn't look like there is anything wrong with your account or with your settings. We still get hundreds of requests for quotes posted on our website every week, but unfortunately we can't guarantee that there will be requests for the services which you offer. We've put this new system in place to try and make it easier for our members to find out why they haven't been selected by the customer to provide the products or services requested, and we hope it will give you some useful feedback on that particular issue from now on.

In response to 'Mr. negative' with his 4 points of why freeindex is pointless below.

1. Freeindex isn't supposed to compete with Google, there's no comparison as they are here for completely different reasons. 95% of people may search Google for businesses or services but the fact is there are still lots and lots of leads on freeindex all there for the taking.

Your freeindex page is just 1 tiny area of your marketing. You need to do a lot more than just create a business page on here and wait for the jobs to come in.

2 Again, clearly enough people know about freeindex to post jobs here.

3. Not at all, your showing you're a business who knows what you are doing by listing yourself in as many places as possible. To create a page on here surely is just a logical thing to do as a business. It's just basic marketing.

4. I have zero reviews but got a customer just the other day and have been in talks with numerous others. Some are yet to be confirmed and some I lost but ultimately they are good businesses who have a requirement for a website and don't know where to begin to look so they take a punt on freeindex.

To say they are all timewasters is a bit much, this certainly isn't the case in my experience.

We joined free index to help boost our google rankings and increase our businesses exposure, we never expected to get actual business leads as it's a free service, we have however found several brides and have been employed by them for their wedding venue styling & flowers.
Of course there are time wasters, they are only the same as customers that come into our shop, this cannot be helped by anyone.
Have you ever tried rated people, you pay to be a member and Pay for each lead individually, this is full of time wasters.
All in all we love free index, they help you appear on google and give you free business.

Custom classifications - now that's a good idea for companies such as Heritage Tiling & Restoration Co below. If your industry isn't there (as you couldn't create a drop down list for everything) then allow the user to enter their own.

I've not really used FI since they changed the format. Prior to the change (just over a year ago, if I remember right), I was looking on here frequently. There seemed to be more leads to chase up then. I did get one job I'd bidded for, in October 2013, but nothing since.
I'm aware that to market this service is costly, but surely FI can afford some form of marketing. I haven't seen anything, anywhere.

Great I hope the review system works as I have had some negative feedback in the past regarding being able to publish a review, as regards leads my work is too specialised = I restore Victorian encaustic & geometric tiled floors , however i'm not able to have or be in a classification which reflects this= i'm lumped in with domestic & commercial tilers.

I too have had too many customers say they have tried to leave reviews without success. Some found registering a head ache and long winded and reviews left not showing up. Hope they sort out the kinks.

Hi Margaret, We have recently simplified the process of writing a review on our site so customers only have to complete one short form with their details and then click on a link which we send to them by email to publish their review. If you're concerned that your reviews are not appearing then please do get in touch with our support team directly and we'd be happy to advise further. Our direct contact form can be found at www.freeindex.co.uk/contact.htm. Many thanks.

Brill very happy
I have found most of my customers I get off here and are very happy with the work just can not be bothered to come back and do a good review but I am sure they would be back to do a bad review if the work was bad.
Plenty of customers off here promise but never do or id have 50 top reviews by now over the years.

I have the same problem, both here and on my website. The best way I've found to get a review is to give the customer a piece of paper and a pen before they leave the premises! Unfortunatley, I this website doesn't allow me to use them :(

Hi , Having used Freeindex since 2012 with fantastic results, i tried lead responses first but found it to be unhelpful to me. But to others maybe ok . My profile and other services provided from Freeindex create approx 50% of my work via email . very possitive results . Thank you very much indeed . Kind regards and thanks again Michael

The Lead Response side of things is just moot, as the fundamental flaws in FreeIndex' brand equity are these:

1) 95% of people and businesses use Google Search (in its many forms) to find stuff or businesses, not though local directories, Yell, Scoot, or FreeIndex etc.
2) FreeIndex simply can't compete with the likes of the TV advertising of RatedPeople and our similar companies who have deep pockets of investor' capital to draw from, thus the general public probably don't really know or have brand trust for the domain. I'd challenge FreeIndex to provide market research to the contrary. Even just "have you ever heard of, or used FreeIndex in the past 12 months". I know what the results would be.
3) We'd bet the perception of the general public (especially the so-called "Cowboy Customers") to FreeIndex is more likely that we're all cowboys and cheapskates for advertising on a site with the name "Free" in their domain, not far removed from an "Ads For Free" news-sheet.
4) Those so-called "Cowboy Customers" that I'm sure many of you would agree are down at the Gumtree time-waster level are just that, time wasters. It is extremely unlikely that you'll get quality customers from here due to the reasons above.

We have seen the TWO main benefits of our Premium membership with FreeIndex for many years now:

1) The excellent Review Widget or Websites (as good as anything Trustpilot etc. can do for a fraction of the cost).
2) Good SEO backlinks (albeit it "No Follow") from a Page Rank 5 level website.

You need to chase up leads people! I got a client on board via freeindex just the other day, I also get regular correspondence back from potentials even if the job has gone to someone who got there before me. It's all about customer relations. Make the most of the clients contact details you get as premium and use them!
Same here. I have responded to almost 20 lead requests over the last 4 years and not a single actual booking (or even an email reply). Perhaps the new changes are a good way forward.

Hi, We do have two separate categories for "Entertainers" and "Children's Entertainers". However some customers may post requests in the "Entertainers" category when they actually want a children's entertainer. Our content team will correct this whenever possible but occasionally a lead posted in the wrong category will get through.

Hi, That might be because you've added a listing for Glasgow to your account as well as Buckie - your business description says that you cover Buckie and the surrounding areas, but doesn't mention Glasgow. If you don't cover the Glasgow area then you may want to remove your Glasgow listing which you can do by logging in, going to your Dashboard, and clicking on the option marked "Branches". Then you won't get alerts for leads which are posted in the Glasgow area. Hope that's helpful.

Hi Colin, Sorry to hear you're not happy with our service. We've put this new system in place specifically to try and help our members to get more feedback from customers which they have provided with a quote, so you don't feel that you are wasting your time by using our lead generation service in future. We will continue to monitor and develop this new system based on the feedback we receive.

Free Index is doing a great job, but unfortunately, I have spent a lot of my valuable time responding to every message/lead, only never to hear from most of them again. I am desperate to find a way to weed out these time wasters. I honestly believe that some people are misinterpreting the name "Free Index" for 'free service'. Should I include on my profile that my service is not free? Or would that be a bit offensive? I wish I knew what to do.
