FreeIndex Version 10 now Live!
Hi EveryoneFinally, after months of development and preparation, Version 10 of FreeIndex is now live. The aim of Version 10 was to make FreeIndex ’simpler, smarter and faster’, and we think it’s the best version of the site yet.
Important: If the site looks weird and things are all over the place, you need to refresh your browser. Your browser may well have a local cache of the site and cause everything to break.
What’s New ?
Design- The new design has improved navigation and is faster to render in your browser. The new drop down menus, which appear when you hover your mouse over any of the main tabs, allow you to get to any part of the site from any other part of the site.
- The homepages of each section i.e. Directory, Leads, Jobs etc now feature a complete breakdown of our category structure making the site much more ‘Index’ like.
- The newly designed gallery shows off business photos more professionally.
- The Login / Sign up screens have been simplified and any new messages or alerts you have received are now displayed when you login.
- The FreeIndex search and listings code has been completely re-written. When you perform a search on FreeIndex, it now only takes 700 lines of code, instead of a whopping 270,000 lines in the previous version. This results in hugely faster searches, and a much better experience of using the site.
- The speed of the ‘My FreeIndex’ member’s area has been improved and it no longer takes so much time to login.
- Quick Quotes is the new name for Leads / Quotes. The name reflects one of our main USPs in that you can get up to 5 quotes from local businesses in as little as an hour.
- Our new City Pages allow you to browse the directory, jobs, events and Quick Quote Requests by city. These are accessible from the homepage. Check out the London page for example.
- It’s now possible to upload multiple images and files at once if you have Adobe Flash installed. (If you have a modern browser, the chances are you will have flash). This makes it easier to add photos, logos and attachments throughout the site. The maximum file size you can upload has also been increased to 3MB.
- Premium Members can now
- Upload up to 40 Images instead of 20.
- Add up to 3 videos, instead of 1.
- Add up to 3 File Attachments to their profile such as product sheets, price lists, menus etc. These can then be downloaded by users.
- Premium Business Members now always get alerted via text / email when a new Quick Quote Request is posted, matching their business to the range and category settings chosen by the user. As standard we only alert the nearest 5 companies by text and the nearest 25 companies by email.

Thanks for all your feedback so far. Listening to whats been said, we have re-thought about the navigation on category pages. We originally decided to move it to the bottom of each category, but on reflection this was not such a good idea. We have now moved subcategory navigation back to the top of category listing pages. Obviously our prime objective is to make it as easy as possible for users to get to what they want.

It's great that you are continuing to develop the website to our advantage. This latest change will make a massive improvement to those seeking services.
I don't seem to be able to post events pictures - not sure if that's a global picture upload issue. A very brief server error message pops up.

I Think I'll stick with the old until bug sorted sorryb to be so negative but feedback says ver 10 not working.

I prefered the previous version, the new one looks run of the mill corproate cookie cutter.
I know there will be bugs in a new release, but i cannot for the life of me add a service. All of functionality on that lighbox popup window does not work. Clicking red text or blue text or even the continue button does not respond. For the techs, JS enabled and i dont have this problem on other sites with similar functionality.

Doesnt seem to load properly in Firefox version 7. If it does, it looks like its unfinished.

If you are having problems with the colour scheme, i.e blue writing on grey background, just reload page by right clicking your mouse and selecting reload. I know this works as I have just done it.

Hi Steve. I think you might be experiencing a browser caching problem. Have you refreshed your Browser. (Hit F5). There are no blue links on a dark grey background that we are aware off.
If that doesn't work please raise a ticket stating what browser / Operating system your using and the development guys will get right on it.

The search does not seem to work (top right)and it took me almost 10 mins to find my company through looking in the lists!! Im sure people will give up unless the search works correctly!!

Sorry but I'm not sure if I live this design from a navigation stand point. I know that this has only just gone live but there are some design things that might get change that I'm not a fan of. The drop down menu isn't great.
Size of font is also big of a issue. Possibly a little bit too small. The format article jobs when you go into a individual job is good and clear.
The formating (css) of some of the pages just seems out a bit.
