Purchased a BC Rich Mocking Bird recently for my son complete with amp. The service I received was excellent and the friendly and professional advice was second to none and true to there word they met on line prices. A very pleasent experience, and advice is always there.
Bought some good Martin acoustics from this shop Staff are very friendly and attentive The main issue is that the stock is simply the best quality for many miles around and if you want quality gear like Gibson rickenbacker Martin or Taylor this is the place to go. Steve, Ingleby Barwick.
I recently bought a guitar tuner from Steve James. Steve himself took time out from stockchecking to not only show me how the tuner works but also a guided tour of the extended acoustic section. I was really pleased he made the effort even though I wasn't spending a fortune. I'm a new customer to the shop and will certainly be a returning customer.
Bought a guitar from them, arrived without having been set up, therefore unplayable. They agreed to set it up, though I had to pay for the postage. Guitar is yet to materialise, after having been sent to them 3 months ago at the time of writing, despite many promises that they would get it done. The guitar I bought from them was a Hagstrom HB-08 bass guitar, which was purchased in January 2012.
Its such a great feeling to know there is finally a music shop like this in Middlesbrough. Since Steven James opened I have bought a number of things from this place ranging from strings and leads to new guitars. I have also used Steve's shop for repairs/setups on a few of my guitars and the quality and price of these repairs were excellent. If Steve says he will finish the job in an hour, it will be done within the hour, I have a lot of faith in this shop because the deadlines set have always been met. If Steve can't meet your deadline then he will contact you with a justified explanation. I was best pleased with this shop when I bought a PRS SE Singlecut from here, I walked into the shop with the cheapest price I found online and Steve matched the price and it arrived earlier than expected, meaning I was able to use this for a gig the same night. Middlesbrough should be proud and grateful for this shop, I no longer need to mess about with the internet because I know this place will help me out just as well! Not to mention that Steve is the only store that stocks Blackstar and Orange amps in Teesside, this is a big bonus for us. I play in a local band and we all use Steven James as well as a lot of our friends who are also in bands from the area. Well done Steve and thank you!Moreexpand_more
Have bought a number of things over the past couple of years from Steve James Guitars - Fretless Jaco style Vintage Bass, bits and bobs and most recently a Markbass CMD102p amp. All I can say is absolutely first class service and very fair and honest. The stuff I was buying was always going to be good quality - that's up to the manufacturer, not the shop - but I do not believe a word of the negative review below regarding part ex. I traded a Fender Aerodyne J bass and an Ashdown double cab and head and got a totally fair price against the Markbass amp, Steve made his money as a business has to do and I got a great product and service, what else can you ask for? I could have probably got the amp £50 cheaper over the internet but I would not have got the same service or peace of mind. Most of all what impressed me was the way he dealt in a very open and honest manner. Can't rate these guys highly enough, both Steve and his staff I have dealt with. Top draw, highly recommended.
I've bought a few things from Steve, a Marshall 4x12 being the biggest, and had a number of guitars repaired by him. After the service, quality of work and prices I've received I will never take my business anywhere else in the future! A first class shop operated by somone with a genuine love for guitars and music.
The first item i purchased was a pack of ernie ball strings spent about half an hour being guided through the shop by steve(there's more upstairs) james he's right there is a lot of stock all very good too so far i have purchased two Ibanez RG2550Z one black one white a 100w Peavey Valve King head and matching cab and a Boss GT10 multi-fxall within the last ten months and as soon as they arrive steve is going to install a pair of seymour duncan pickups into the white ibanez steve also did a fret dress and set-up on a Washburn N4 that i own it actually plays like a custom shop guitar should now noy like when i bought it some ten years ago to sum it up great shop great prices and friendly staff.
My wife wanted an electric guitar for Christmas 2007, we went to Steve James and got a Fender Squire starter kit. She was very pleased and happy with the product. This got her hooked and within one year we went back for a new guitar, she tried loads of different types being helped superbly my Mr James' assistant. She decided on an Epiphone Casino with floating bridge for an excellent price with a superb case. Shortly after that she was well chuffed when she saw The Edge from U2 playing the exact same model on the Jonathon Ross show. Since then we part exchanged the Squire Strat for a Mexican Strat at an excellent price and have purchased various amps and accessories - not to mention a Fender Sonoran. We have always received excellent service and have enjoyed visiting the shop. We now live in Newcastle and no shop here even comes close.
I took my Ibanez PGM301 to Steven James Guitars for some advice on repairing my worn frets and fretboard expecting an expensive refret job costing easily in excess of around £120. I was advised all I it needed was a stoning to relevel and reshape the frets to remove any wear, a pretty daunting thought for a reasonably expensive guitar that I care for greatly. The job was complete bang on time within only a couple of days. The guitar was returned to me stoned, cleaned, polished and restrung with my choice of string guage and it hasn't looked, played or sounded better since I bought it, all for FAR less than half the cost of a refret job. Great customer service, outstanding prices and a cool shop. I'll defonitely be returning there for anything I need.
Both my friend and myself went to buy a very expensive guitar each, one a Martin and one a Fender. We both had excellent quality part exchanges to put in but were shocked by the P/X price offered, in fact we were very offended and obviusely took our business elsewhere and won't be back. Just be prepared to be insulted if you take a P/X to the shop. Sorry Steve, this has cost you a lot of business from our band and friends.
Steven james guitars is a very good shop when buying band equipment me and band came in about a week ago and baught a new Ibanez and Jackson guitar and we were just stunned by the quality of guitar and the price of the guitars where and since we got the two guitars we got a discount of a new "Line 6 spider Valve amp".
I took an acoustic guitar to Steve for minor repairs and I was very impressed with the quality of his work, so when my Tele needed a pick-up change and set-up I entrusted the work to Steve rather than travel out of the area. He came up trumps and the guitar plays better than ever. A few months later I was looking for a replacement bass-amp; at my request Steve got an AER basic performer in for me to try out, when that didn't suit he recommended a MarkBass and again got one in for me to try. It's a superb amp and Steve matched the best internet price I could find. You can't ask for more than that.
