About Soul of the City Choir Brighton

With two choirs on a Monday and Tuesday Soul of the City sings funky gospel, pop and soul songs to packed audiences throughout Brighton and Hove all year round. There are three 12 week terms every year starting in, January, April and September.

The Soul of the City Choir is made up of people of all ages and abilities - whether you're a complete beginner, shower singer or more experienced singer, this choir welcomes you. As Soul of the City is a community choir it's always open to new members.

There are no auditions or requirements to read music. The choirs get together each week to sing fantastic songs and then heads to the pub afterwards for a well deserved drink. The weekly choir sessions are up-beat, friendly and lead by an experienced vocal tutor; you're bound to have a fantastic time.

With expert tutors, members will have the opportunity to not only sing fantastic songs but sing to a very high standard in just 11 weeks. At the end of each 11 week term the choir puts on a charity gig to give something back to the local community. Performing in the end of term concert is great fun and highly recommended, but not compulsory.

Soul of the City Choir Leader Vanessa is an experienced choir leader, professional singer, music educator and pianist with a passion for helping students of all ages and abilities realise their musical potential and goals. Her career has seen her in the roles of musical director and conductor of numerous choirs, which have performed at major venues such as The Royal Festival Hall and The Brighton Dome as well as being featured on TV and radio. Vanessa is excited and enthusiastic about rehearsing with the Soul of the City choir and welcomes everyone to come along. Throughout her many years of teaching she has not yet met anyone who truly can not sing.

Our next terms start in January, April / May and September.

Agree the concert could be longer than 45 mins. It would be helpful if the choir night could start a bit earier say 7pm at finish by 8. 30 would help with transport.

The feed back I had from my family was that they really enjoyed the singing but wished that it had gone on for more than 45 mins. Is this a possibility for future concerts. Michele Giles.

I have been a member of the choir since it first started in September 2009. It is a fantastic pick me up on a Tuesday night. I have really enjoyed the practice nights and making new friends in the pub afterwards. The concerts are very special and we sound amazing thanks to our charismatic leader Vanessa.

Amazing - by far the best choir in Brighton and their term fees are actually a lot lower than the other local choirs. Vanessa is brilliant, her excitement is infectious and she has a wonderful gift for encouraging singers of all levels. A true community choir.

I can't describe how much pleasure I get from being part of such an amazing community choir. It's thanks to the dedication of Vanessa and Paul - who put in an enormous amount of preparation and planning, instilling in us drive and energy at every rehearsal - that it all comes together on 'gig night', creating moments that we'll remember forever.
