Julian has just surveyed a Hallberg Rassy 34 for me. From my first enquiry onwards, his service was exemplary. He gave me some good advice during our first telephone conversation before I even knew for sure that the job would go ahead. We arranged to meet on the boat on the day of the survey, and he provided some useful "on the spot" preliminary comments and explanations. His report was produced promptly; it was detailed, thorough and clear. He subsequently spent time going through the queries I raised, and providing further advice. I would have no hesitation in recommending his service.

Julian undertook a pre-purchase survey for us at the end of last year during the second Covid-19 lock-down. As such, he was our 'eyes and ears' as we were unable to view the vessel first-hand. On the basis of his survey, we decided not to proceed further with the purchase. He was very professional and we would recommend his services highly.

Hamble Marine Surveys (Julian Smith) recently did a pre-purchase survey of an 18 year old blue-water yacht for us. We joined him for the survey and he was clearly highly experienced/knowledgeable and happy to talk us through everything as he inspected it. I was recommended HMS by someone who had used him and will never be able to thank them enough for the introduction. I was taking a bit of a gamble on a Hanse 575 what was terribly, err, 'tired', and the detail with which Julian did his job has added insight and counsel that would absolutely not have come from someone less fastidious; I've had 4 full surveys over the years and the detail, practical insight and really grounded recommendations that come from Julian are true differentiators from other surveyors. Julian has offered to meet me separately on the boat since the report if I need to see more context and he's looked at the purchase like it was his own money. Its a fine line to tread to amass all the detail bit still keep the perspective rather than worry the purchase to death, and he treads it brilliantly.

Julian performed a thorough survey on my Lagoon 440 in Turkey at the end of September. Despite the difficulties of dealing in a foreign country, Julian’s attention to detail and knowledge of this type of vessel, made him a valuable asset in the negotiations which followed the survey. We asked Julian to survey and sea trial an Oyster 46 at short notice. He exceeded all of our expectations - he did exactly what we asked of him and more. In late April 2017, we were in the process of buying a 2010 J/97 located in Hamble. Needed a pre-purchase survey which would also satisfy for insurance purposes. Not being local to Hamble (from Dublin), called a number of surveyors but as soon as we talked with Julian, we knew immediately he was the man for the job. And how right we were. We received a 26 page report with colour photographs providing us with a very comprehensive document. Prior to actually purchasing, we met with Julian at very short notice. His knowledge, sensible advice, friendly demeanour and sheer enthusiasm for his profession was immediately evident. He had no problem in answering all our questions and did not rush our discussions despite the fact that he had a busy calendar. Julian surveyed my Bavaria 32 that I was in the process of purchasing from a broker. The boat itself turned out to be in reasonable order but there was a significant list of remedial work that needed to be undertaken to get her fully back to good working order. Without doubt bar 1 or 2 exceptions I would have completely missed these and the overall cost of doing it myself would have been significant. As a consequence of the survey I was able to negotiate all of the key category A and B defects to be resolved by the broker (who was best placed to do this given the resources they have at their disposal). So finally when I received the boat she was in excellent running order. The survey itself was really thorough and covered all aspects of the boat. (I have bought a boat in the past and I can say that this survey was much more comprehensive). So all in all a great service and money well invested as I reckon overall it saved me a couple of thousand pounds.
