I booked an appointment to have my ariel looked at as we had bought a free view box and the signal wasn't strong enough. We use sky at the moment. I was told a new ariel would be about £230. They phoned and asked to change the appointment to the day before but I couldn't so they said the existing appointment would be alright. It was between 12 and 4. At 12. 30 I got a call from the engineer to say that before he came out he needed to inform me of a few things - they would need to do a sight survey for £50+ before anything else, I would need to have new cables around the house for each tv as anything under 2-3yrs old is now defunct, they would cost £60 each, also a new transformer and they billed at £50 an hour for all the work. He said I was looking at possibly £700 and it still might not work. I said why are you calling me at 12. 30 to tell me this when you are supposed to be here between 12 and 4 and I have taken the day off? He was quite abrupt and I got the impression he just didn't want to come out. At one point he said think about it because I have another call coming in and then put the phone down on me. He did call back but I had to take the day off work and he obviously didn't want to come out, he just went on and on about it being a waste of time and in the end I said I won't bother then.I appreciate he could have come out and charged me lots of money and it still not worked but I think I could have been phoned before the allotted time and I also could have been told about the hourly charge for work and the site survey - which would have meant my quoted £230 for an ariel would have been at least £330.Sorry for the bad review but I am not impressed by this service or my wasted time.Moreexpand_more
Response : In reply to Mrs Sally Laird. Comment . I am sorry that by trying to help this customer by way of saving her a £40 callout fee I did not make myself better understood. In the good old days things were much simpler and a whole lot different from now. We would callout see what was required and if need be fix it there and then or install a new TV aerial, usually just to one TV Point. All within one hour or so. Those days have now gone. Now with Digital Signals there are more levels of complexity within the signal it’s self.
In addition, the customer has a wider range of other ways to bring good quality signals into the home rather than by way of just a TV Aerial that the customer’s of long ago did not have. Also with all the Health & Safety regulations on climbing at heights & using safety kit there is more time involved and with this more expense to the customer. Therefore, now all customers phoning this Company will be told there is a Callout cost for an Engineer to call at the customers address. We do not call out to do free quotes. Some company’s do I believe those persons are desperate for work and will tell customers what the customer wants’ to hear. We do not we can give some quotes over the phone Examples:- Call out to test Signal levels on customers own Aerial on a rather costly bit of test equipment a £2.500 Promax Spectrum Analyser. To leave a report of all the signal levels with the customer also do a site survey for installing an Aerial or a Dish to be installed at a later date this is a written report only NO labour involved. A survey should only take one hour. Alternatively, a call out for repair £55 per hour plus parts? Aerials from £195 to £230 in general Dishes from £140 and so on Today without a site survey, it is quite impossible to give a customer over the telephone the absolute cost for work to be carried out that is why we have a callout system in place without it we would not know what we were talking about and in a number of cases it has proven to be positive in saving customer’s a grate deal of money. As a CAI plus Member & RDI registered Installer with Qualification in Electrical and Electronic Servicing (Signal Reception) path way, together with over 30 years working experience behind me in the area. I find that I am in demand quite a bit, and at times, work is booked some 7 days in advance. Due to all the different types of work, I undertake the weather is a factor on what work can and cannot be done on the appointment day. Therefore, I only look at each days work on the day I am due to visitTo contact each customers days before hand with a question would result in a lot of confusion with us not knowing what we are doing from one day to the next. We stick to a tried and tested method. I will Phone the customer before I call out if I have concerns or wish to know more details. Regarding the customers, enquire. Alternatively, if weather conditions are bad.Looking at the work required by Mrs Sally Laird… It was poor reception on Aerial & running 4 TV points. Works required. 1. Repair Aerial cost £55 plus parts. 2. Fit New Aerial cost £195 to £230 if fitted to chimney.3. £40 to callout test signal on Aerial & conduct a site survey and leave report and costs with customer for Aerial work to be carried out later. On the appointment day, looking at the name of the address it was apparent that the property was at one time perhaps an old farmhouse or such like. Also in a bad reception area. Therefore, I could see there was a potential problem right away. Also concerning fitting an Aerial to the Chimney it needed to be in good state of repair or not. In other words work must be within building regulations if in any doubt then the OK from a survey maybe required before a chimney mounted aerial can be installed. I phoned Mrs Sally Laird to explain that she was in a poor reception area and just by installing a New TV Aerial did not guaranteed 100% picture quality. As Signal levels are outside of human control. I explained to give the Digital signal the best chance to work within its limits on all the six Multiplexes would require possibly having changed all the cables to the 4 TV Points this would be costly. In addition, there are limits to the signal if under that limit the Signal will fail. I explained the only way to be 100% sure to receive good quality signals was by way of Sky Dish or Freesat Dish if there was a clear line of sight, or cable if available. I also explained putting the aerial on the chimney may not be possible if I can’t fix the Aerial to the Chimney where will it go This then creates another problem, where to fit the Aerial plus lowering the height. It was at this point I think I told Mrs Sally Laird that I had another call coming in and I would have to take it as I had been on the phone for quite a while to her it was at that point the phone went dead! For some reason “I did not hang up.” The other call was in fact not a call just something wrong with the phone. I called Mrs Sally Laird Back moments later, and picked up the conversation again, and pointed out all the pitfalls health & Safety matters regarding what and what cannot be done 1. Attic not able to enter attic spaces if it is not lit and well ventilated also must be boarded with fixed ladder and light, all this sort of thing we have to conceder. I can if you still wish callout test the aerial on a spectrum analyser and confirm what you already know that the signal is bad. Cost £40.I cannot fix things just by moving or putting something on something to make it work any better for £40 it just dose not work that way unfortunately.I can call out to do a site survey at a cost £40 and to leave a quotation for a Freesat Dish installation with you.I had the impression that Mrs Sally Laird was not really taking in what I was trying to explain Mrs Sally Laird was more concerned with wanting to find out how much it would cost for a TV aerial I expect. Again I told Mrs Sally Laird I did not think that a TV Aerial installed would work to within the limits and to install one could be a costly gamble on her part if after installation it failed the signal tests. She would be liable to pay for the installation if good or bad. It has happened only one time just before Christmas it cost the Customer £230. With no improvement to the signal, the customer gambled and unfortunately lost. When Mrs Sally laird asked how costly would this be or something to that effect My reply was I could give you some ballpark numbers now for the cost of an Aerial installation saving you the cost of the callout to pay. Ok yes, she replayed what’s that then or something to that effect. Installation will start £195 or £230 if fitted to the chimney if the chimney is in good conduction to receive the fittings. Or if a higher gain aerial was required on a much taller mast say 3 to 5 meters then the cost can go up to £350 or so The cable from the aerial would run to the attic this is classed as one point To a distribution amplifier Cost £50 or so. Then there is the cost for an electrician to install a 3 amp fused spur to work the amplifier Cost £? Then the question of cables if old cables then benchmarked cables would have to be fitted to each TV point. Running 4 cables each cable coming from the amplifier in the attic Cost for each is as much as £65 per run Plus £55 per hour to run 4 cables each cable say one hour I told Mrs Sally Laird that you could see how the costs can go up very quickly and get out of control when trying to install an Aerial to 4 points in a poor reception area and that other ways maybe a better way forward for her it was at this point the conversation was not going any where Mrs Sally Laird said a few words then hung the phone up.I was sorry I was unable to help this customer but at the end of the day, I can only tell it how it is. We have 100’s of satisfied customers many have saved money with our recommendations some have had to spend money. We can say that the customers that we have installed an Aerial or Freesat Dish now enjoy good Signals to there home.Look at our reviews on here speaks for its self I think .
