About Red Lion

The Red Lion at Cotherstone is an 18th Century (1738) Grade II listed public house situated in the heart of Teesdale. Located 4 miles from Barnard Castle and 6 miles from Middleton-in-Teesdale. We serve cask real ales, bitters, beers and ciders from the finest local craft brewers. There's a beer garden, open fires and traditional pub games. Food isn't served at the Red Lion but we do have a good selection of crisps and nuts! Open six nights a week from 5pm (closed Tuesdays). See Red Lion website (link above) for any variation to regular opening times.
Please note, we now have a 'no paws indoors' policy. No pets in the bar, assistance animals only. Thanks.

Within the walls of the Red Lion you won't find a jukebox, television or arcade machine. Just good beer, conversation and the crackle of an open fire.

We serve Yorkshire Dales Brewing Company - Butter Tubs (golden bitter) and Aysgarth Falls (blonde ale) as our permanent ales. We also have available, direct from the tap, locally produced Kemp's cider; which is oak aged for 12 months in whisky barrels.

We're once again listed within the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and have been since 2007. Many thanks go to CAMRA's ongoing support for traditional pubs and good ale.

Dogs no longer allowed inside. After reading fantastic reviews about this pub and how dog friendly it is, we travelled here from outside the area but were very disappointed to find dogs are no longer allowed inside. Although there was no problem sitting in the beer garden it was too cold and wet so we left after 1 pint.

We went in the Red Lion a couple of times whilst staying in Romaldkirk in May. We shall be returning as the pub and landlord Richard were fantastic. Proper real ales, friendly locals, a warm welcome for our dog and excellent prices. If you are in the area this hostelry should not be missed.

This local ale house is kept in the old way no TV no Music just plain speaking folk I have visited this place for the last three years on my trip up North. The ale is kept and served by the Landlord since 2002. You are welcome wind or shine but leave your muddy boots at the door. So if you are walking or driving check the hours as he needs his rest, come and taste his fine ales.

My sort of village pub. Cracking local real ales in excellent condition. Has a lovely friendly community feel to it that welcomes all visitors. (Pity it doesn't open until 1900 as the last bus to Barnard Castle leaves a few minutes later! ).

Better late than never. Just a great big thank you to Richard and his mam for the delicious christmas dinner he served to me and my family, ( 27 or was it 25 no maybe only 23 in total ) We came away full to the top and very merry. Cotherstone is a fab place to live and we will stay here forever. Thank you again Richard XX.

We Teesdale Motor Club, use the Red Lion as our venue for our monthly club meetings (the second Sunday @ 19:30hrs every month), we always get a warm welcome from Richard, great beer and good old home cooking, its great. Prior to making the Red LIon our home, we tried other venues, non of which came up to scratch, we wont be going anywhere else other than the Red Lion, its part of our club! .

A wonderful village pub, that welcomes everyone equally. Be it a local customer or passing trade Richard never fails to make all feel welcome. His beers are kept to a high standard and vary greatly from month to month! We are lucky to use this pub pretty frequently and love the atmosphere, of this little gem of a Cotherstone pub.

I couldn't believe my luck! A trip back in time to an original pub where excellent real ales are offered in a warm welcoming bar filled with visitors and locals enjoying great conversation and banter over a pint. Yes I'll be back soon.

We go to this pub if we are staying at doe park caravan park. It would get a higher score however we feel the landlord is a bit aloof and tends to just grunt hello at casual trade from the Caravan park who probably keep his pub afloat but has a big welcome for locals. The prices are good and the real fire is a delight. UPDATE With hindsight probably my description of "grunt" was off the mark and unfair Its probably the pub up the road ( Fox and Hounds) where the Landlord is a bit unwelcoming thats why we would rather drink in Barney.
Response : Thanks for the feedback. In the Red Lion I always try to be friendly and forthcoming to all my customers. The relaxed, dog friendly front bar is an extension of my home and I strive to welcome all without bias. I've usually a great rapport with customers from Doe Park, knowing so many on first name terms; I’m sorry on this occasion it has appeared that I've not got to know you better. I can only apologise and suggest my appearance of ‘grunting’ may be down to my weird East Durham accent! You’ll be pleased to note I’m still boasting the lowest priced cask/draught beers in the area and was very recently awarded CAMRA Teesdale Pub of the Season. Thanks again for taking the time to review my listing and I look forward to giving you a warm welcome next time at the Red. Regards, Richard.Moreexpand_more
