About The White House Studio

Established in 1987 by the experienced in-house engineer, The White House Studio offers recording, mixing and mastering services to diverse clients throughout the UK. The studio is equipped with both 24-track analogue and Pro Tools HD with iZ-ADA converters, abundant effects and outboard, including many rare vintage items. A drum room, isolation booths and separate control room allow bands to play together without compromising their sound. Situated in Kewstoke (Weston-super-mare) in a rural location, the emphasis is on affordability, personal service, professional results and a pleasant working environment.

Enabling clients to achieve their desired 'sound' economically, the studio provides bands and solo artists with a truly professional production at affordable rates. With an extensive range of equipment and friendly engineer, the recording experience is intended to be creative, productive and enjoyable.

The White House Studio has an expanding and diverse range of clients, from throughout the UK, primarily self-funded musicians and 'indie' record labels. Most musical styles that require acoustic recording are represented, from rock to jazz, punk to classical. Over the years several bands have been signed as a result of early demos, including Million Dead and Slow Dive. Mastering is now a big part of the business offering that important final 'polish' at very affordable rates - recent clients include Western Star Records and Jelli Records.

The studio is run by Martin Nichols who has worked within the recording world for over 25 years. From a background in audio electronics, and having previously owned The Basement Studio and worked at Woodcray in Wokingham, Martin Nichols is more than qualified to look after the business and its varied clients. People skills, impeccable technical knowledge and attention to detail at all stages of the production are his key strengths.

Thank you so much Martin for your time and expertise. I had a tricky 2" audio reel that hadn't been kept in suitable storage for 40 years and as a result was suffering with several problems. Martin very patiently cleaned and baked the entire reel before doing the transfer, which yielded excellent results. This was precious material and I recommend Martin as someone who can be trusted with valuable assets and he clearly knows how to get the best results.

Martin Nichols runs a wonderful studio with some fabulous gear and a marvellous pair of ears - we worked together for a couple of days remastering tracks for the Jack Rubies and the results have been sensational - a resounding stamp of approval from all the Rubies! Looking forward to further projects Martin, and thank you for your great work!

I've been bringing my various projects to Martin since 1982… He really is 'that' old. And I'm still coming back, despite his best attempts to avoid me. He even moved to Kewstoke, some 95 miles away from his original location and I still found him!

We always had great results recording for our band Annalise in the 90s/2000s. We recorded onto 24 track tape 'live' and it gave us the authentic punk sound we wanted. Martin used to let us sleep over in the studio - don't know if he still does that but it was definitely part of the experience at the time! The White House is great for DIY/Punk bands, and I think Martin has had a hand in recording a lot of this kind of stuff.

I've used the audio transfer services offered by Martin at White House Studio twice now to resurrect some old band recordings - once to transfer some old ADAT tapes, and again to transfer a 24 track analogue AMEX tape. Both times I've received exceptional service, from the ball-park quotes received as a result of an initial email at the outset, to the honest appraisal of what needed to be done (and any potential problems likely to be found as a result of the media ageing), down to the final result and extremely reasonable pricing. I don't have any more old band recordings to transfer, but if I did, I'd be straight back and wouldn't hesitate recommending this service to anyone.

Martin is the best mastering engineer I have ever worked with - and my last LP was done at Abbey Road. He has made my new record sound incredible! You will not be disappointed.

I contacted Martin at White House Recording Studio and asked him to convert an 18-year old ADAT tape. This was a recording of a live gig. The original recording levels had hit the end stops in some places. Through a combination of careful editing and using clipping repair software Martin converted the ADAT tape and sent me back the audio files, which I then imported into Logic and mixed. The sound quality was excellent and I was really pleased with the result. I would thoroughly recommend Martin - excellent quality work, fast turnaround, great communications and very professional. If I have any similar project in the future, I will be back. Thank you again.

I'm from Texas in the USA, and I mailed a DAT recording of a Kings of Leon show, which I had taped in Houston, back in May of 2007. Martin was able to flawlessly transfer the data on the tape into digital files which I could then store on my computer hard drive. He also mixed the recording for me, as well as edit it for an optimal listening experience on cd. I am extremely pleased with the results, as he was able to make the show sound even better! I couldn't have asked for a better experience all around! He was very friendly, and kept me up to date on all progress. I finally have a convenient, and much improved, copy of a show that I have dreamed of transferring from that DAT recording I made, oh so long ago. Cheers Martin! You will always have a friend in Texas, USA. Yee haw! Lol.

I recently had a reeel to reel copy recorded in 1973 restored here and the results were absolutely fantastic. The attention to detail given by was Martin impeccable giving a faultless result. In addition, to the technical results, Martin is an amazing person to work with.

This is the studio that managed to achieve the impossible - to restore the tapes of Bob Marley's concerts in London and Paris between 1974 and 1978. These were found in the damp basement of a run-down hotel in north-west London where Bob Marley and the Wailers had stayed during their European tours in the mid-1970s. "They were severely water damaged with plasticised gunk oozing from every inch. In truth it looked like it was going to be a hopeless task to save the sound quality of the recordings. The end result has really surprised me, because they are now in a digital format and are very high quality; it shows the original recordings were very professionally made. From the current find of 13 tapes, 10 were restored, two were blank and one was damaged beyond repair. " (Jazz singer Louis Hoover, whose business partner discovered the tapes). When Hoover first heard the recordings, which cost around £25,000 to restore, he admits to being blown away. “It made the hair on the back of our necks stand up and genuine shivers ran up our spines with joy. “The experience was comparable to, say, finding Van Gogh’s easel, paint pallet and paints in an old room somewhere, then Vincent emerges through a secret door to paint 26 of his finest masterpieces … purely for us.”.Moreexpand_more

We've recorded with Martin for 30 years now (30 years? ! Jeez). Simply: you won't find anyone more knowledgeable, and experienced in making your creative offerings sound utterly superb. Fantastic quality and value. PS Martin likes curry, which means he's OK by us.

I have just had some reels of 2" tape baked and transferred to digital data. Martin Nichols provided truly exceptional service and the result is first class. The price was the keenest I found in UK, but there was no quality compromise whatsoever. Very highly recommended, I will certainly return.

Converted old DAT tapes into WAV format some of which were originally recorded at White House Studios. Also converted old 1/2" master tapes into WAV and cleaned up audio. Awesome results! Professional, knowledgeable, experienced and creates a great sound.

I have worked with Martin for almost two years, on some very complex projects but I have never been disappointed with the results. This is an excellent studio for production results.

I have worked professionally in a great many studios and The Whitehouse is one of the very best. The range of equipment is astonishing - from old analogue classics to cutting edge digital. The best thing though is Martin. He knows what every diode in the building is doing and how to milk the very best result out of the sounds for you. His attention to detail is legendary and his prices extremely competitive. Five stars without question.

We have spent 3 days working with Martin. To be sure he is a classic and experienced engineer, great ears and very detailed. Good at dealing with stroppy guitarists, moody drummers, wild bassists and up-their-own-### keyboardists. Not to mention delicate flower or ego singers :)Value for money is great. He has good kit (although not entirely fantastic selection of jumpers)Feed biscuits + tea.
