About Scenic Painters

Courses in scenic painting run from a professional scenic art studio. We offer a series of weekend courses which focus on particular areas of scenic painting and scenic art. Topics covered include wood effects, stone, metal and brick. We also offer backdrop painting courses, a two week introduction course and a five week course covering most aspects of scenic painting and scenic art.

The site is also home to the “Scenic Painters Directory”, a directory of scenic painters and scenic artists that covers the whole of the UK. Each scenic artist has a profile page with a gallery, work experience and training history as well as other useful information. We have artists listed in most parts of the UK. Its free to join and use the directory.

The Scenic Painters website has a very useful Jobs notice board where employers post details of their requirements. This has been used by scenery companies, theatre companies and schools. We've posted work for the fashion, film, TV and theatre industries. Its free to use for scenics and employers.

The site is run by James Rowse, a scenic artist with over twenty years experience painting scenery for the stage. James Rowse began work as a scenic artist at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. He has painted scenery for numerous theatre productions and has also worked on a number of TV and film projects. In 2006 James started DAP Studio, an independent scenic art studio specializing in scenery for the stage. DAP Studio, (Scenic Painters sister company) have painted scenery for English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Shakespeare's Globe, The Donmar Warehouse, The Almeida Theatre, The Royal Court, as well as numerous West End and international productions.

I had the most amazing time learning scenic painting with James. I feel like I came away with a lot more knowledge than I expected, passed on through a plethora of scenic painting generations! It was all very fun and incredibly inspiring. It's so nice to meet someone who is still so energised and into his passion for art. The learning techniques were presented nice and digestible and I felt extremely welcome and catered for. Do this course! You won't be disappointed :).

During my time at Dap Studios I completed two weekend courses covering both metal affects and stone affects. I found the weekend courses a great way of learning. Small groups meant you could listen and watch examples easily and enabled you to all interact comfortably with each other, making new friends and contacts. James went into great depth with his teaching and explanations behind all the techniques he showed us. We were able to cover so many different areas of stone and metals which was extremely rewarding especially as we only had two days on each. I definitely felt I got a lot for my money. It left me feeling confident in what I had been taught and even helped toward me getting my current job. :).

The DAP scenic painting course really has proved to be an amazing investment. I went in with no knowledge of the industry, let alone any technical knowhow, and after an action packed, fully practical two weeks, emerged with much better chances of starting a career as a scenic painter. Not only does James teach loads of really useful painting processes, but offers constant advice and insight about the other sides to the business, such as who to approach for work, and how to present yourself professionally. The advice he gave on CV writing, portfolios and websites was invaluable, as is his continued support, long after the course has ended.

DAP Scenic course was both very informative on the processes used in scenic art and was challenging. There was a wealth of information available to the student and the course was well constructed and packed with many techniques, which have proved invaluable to me when first starting out as a scenic painter. Best course I have studied on to date!
