Consumer unit upgrades in the region of £400 to £550. The trusty old fuse box is still a common sight in many houses built before the 1990s. Many of them are still perfectly safe and there is no legal requirement to change them. However, the majority of these installations will lack RCD protection and this safety device can, quite simply, save your life. A surge protection device is also an inexpensive option worth considering. A consumer unit upgrade is also a good opportunity to iron out any faults in an installation as a thorough check of all circuits is carried out as part of the work. Many houses still have inadequate earthing provision which can easily be remedied.
Remember, just because a light comes on when you press the switch doesn't mean it's safe. You can't hear, see or smell electricity but you sure can feel it! Look after it. It does need maintenance.
