By chance a Google search lead me to Reid Timber and I'm very glad it did. Guitar blanks are expensive but not if buying from here. Bought a lovely 1 piece Sapele blank for the last build. Another 2 builds are underway and I'm planning a 3rd. All with timber from Reid's. Great selection and good advice on offer too.
I travel up from London once or twice a year to buy from this shop and the service is always superb. I love the fact that the wood has been surfaced so that you can see what you are buying. The range is unbelievable, especially for small box makers and musical instrument makers, but he does have a large stock of bigger pieces that would be perfect for furniture makers. The conversation and knowledge is excellent as well. Very relaxed and easy to walk around. The picture is a box made from Padauk purchased at the Reid timber. The wood quality is always superb.
Having been into the shop in person previously, made my first online order for a few larger pieces of hardwood to avoid lugging it halfway across town in taxis. Extremely pleased with the delivered goods - straight, nicely figured, dimensions as described, very timely delivery. Really good job all round, will be back for more sometime soon!
Paid my first visit to Reid timber on Friday 13th December. The 40 mile round trip was well worth the effort. An absolute Alladin's cave. Alitair could not have been more helpful and nothing was any trouble. Anyone looking for timber, exotic or home grown, at very reasonable prices you will do well to give him a visit. If he doesn't have what you are looking for he will more than likely get it for you. You wont be disappointed. He doesn't sell anything of dubious quality either. Roy from Kilmarnock.
I had been looking for deecent tulipwood boards of a particular thickness. Alistair didn't have that thickness in stock, but was able to get some at short notice, and to cut to size. Very reasonably priced. I then found he has the best and widest selection of timbers I have yet come across in Scotland.
