About Practical Karate Association
The Practical Karate Association teaches DART Karate for Self Defence and Kyohan Shotokan Karate. Based in High Wycombe and Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire but providing world class self defence training in Britain, Europe and North America, the Practical Karate Association is affiliated to the British Combat Association and the British Combat Karate Association (BCKA). It is a member of the Independent Safeguarding Service.
The Practical Karate Association provides both martial arts classes and effective self protection training for adults and teenagers of all genders.
DART Self Defence classes are run for adults (and mature teenagers) at our two venues in Wycombe (the Wycombe sports centre and the Wycombe Judo centre) and we have a teenager focused self defence class for students at the RGS High Wycombe. The DART Self Defence classes are predominantly focused on Self Defence with Self Protection advice provided in the syllabus, instructor blog and books, recommended reading and world class scenario training.
Kyohan Shotokan Karate training is run for adults and teenagers in High Wycombe. Shotokan Karate is a traditional Japanese Karate System and the High Wycombe classes are focused towards self defence while staying true to the original forms with close quarter grappling, striking and unbalancing techniques taught in legally underpinned drills that quickly take students to dynamic and alive training.
Shotokan Karate is known for its fluid movement, powerful techniques and physical development. The Kyohan Shotokan classes improve fitness, mobility and agility and provide enjoyable and challenging training.
The Practical Karate Association's Chief Instructor is John Titchen. John is a member of the British Combat Association (one of the world's leading groups for close-quarter combat, self-protection and practical martial arts). In addition to his books, John has been a regular contributor for Traditional Karate Magazine, Combat Magazine and the ezine Jissen. He now writes articles on self defence and applied karate for his blog and has taught both Karate and Self Defence seminars across Great Britain, Europe, the USA and Canada.
John Titchen is best known internationally for the creation of realistic safe scenario training and his work on legally underpinned self defence, but he is also respected in the karate community for writing a number of critically acclaimed books on the application of traditional karate kata. John’s seminars, books, youtube videos and articles have become very popular with the growing number of groups and individuals looking to enhance their own training through a pragmatic approach to the application of traditional martial arts for effective self defence. He has Qualified Teacher Status with the DfE and a broad range of experience in teaching in the secondary education, adult education, further education and co-curricular sectors.
