If your UPVC door is not locking properly as in the handle is stiff to lift, it could be that it is out of alignment putting strain on the locking mechanism, eventually this will cause it to break and could lock you out or even lock you in, depending on age and condition no need to change the whole door, most of the time all is needed is a new centre gearbox, or the whole lock strip depending on what make it is.

Look for the kite mark on the faceplate of your mortice lock to ensure that it is up to British Standard (BS3621) for your exterior wooden door.
