About Japanese Ideas

Japanese Ideas is a unique business offering hands on cookery class by native Japanese to anyone who is interested in Japanese cooking. Although Japanese cuisine became popular, many people do not know about it other than raw fish. Japanese Ideas introduces Japanese home cooking, the dishes ordinary Japanese people eat at home, the dishes taught by mothers and grandmothers.

Types of class.
Sushi class - four different types of sushi and miso soup - 3 hours.
Dinner party class - four different dishes and Japanese style plain rice - 3 hours.
Mini sushi class - three different types of sushi - 1. 5 hours.

Starting with welcome Japanese tea followed by talking about the dish, going through the recipe, hands on cooking in the kitchen and sitting down and eating what you have just cooked.

Japanese ideas is managed by Hiroko Clark who came to England in 1989. The foreign cuisine was not popular at that time and the words “TV chef” were not invented, but now there are so many cooking programmes on TV and exotic ingredients are widely available. Hiroko thinks it is important to learn authentic food from the natives.

Local catering service and cooking at your house for your dinner party are also available.

We did the tofu making class with Hiroko and it was brilliant! Tofu was made from scratch and we prepared 4 different dishes with it. Would definitely recommend for anyone who loves tofu.

I was gifted a sushi course by my wife for my 60th birthday. I was blown away by the course and transformed, from what I thought was a daunting coookery skill, into a very relaxing and enjoyable way to prepare such delicate food was an experience I will never forget. I learned so much from the making of sushi rolls to making a Japanese Omelette and thinly slicing ingredients (without adding a "hint of finger" to the recipe! It is an experience I will never forget.

My sister and I had a private class, where we cooked four dishes then ate them for lunch. Firstly, Hiroko was an excellent teacher and provided recipe sheets for all we made to take home with us. Secondly, she is also an excellent cook and the food she taught us to prepare was amazing. There are so many dishes to choose for your lesson too. Overall, an awesome day and it was lovely to spend it with Hiroko and my sister.

I cannot recommend Hirokos cooking classes enough! We made 4 dishes, I am a vegetarian but my partner eats meat, however Hiroko ensured that everything could be made vegetarian for me! We learnt so much, not only from the recipes but also about Japanese culture, knife skills and some plant care tips! This is truly an amazing way to spend a day with a loved one, friends or by yourself. Thank you for everything Hiroko.

Hiroko made everyone feel comfortable and at ease from the get-go. A fabulous introduction to what Sushi is and then detailed instruction and guidance on how to make beautiful sushi. It was wonderful to be able to share the experience with friends and meet some new people, I will definitely be having a go at making sushi at home. Thank you Hiroko.

My partner and I had a very enjoyable afternoon learning Japanese cooking earlier this year. Hiroko was friendly and made us comfortable, explaining things well and teaching us many tips and techniques. The food we made was delicious and it was nice to sit down together and eat at the end. We were given copies of the recipes we had made which have been very useful since. I would highly recommend Hiroko's classes. Thankyou Hiroko (and my apologies for taking a long time to leave a review! ).

We thoroughly enjoyed our one and a half hour class at Japanese Ideas. It was amazing how much we made and learnt in the time and the food was so delicious! Hiroko is an excellent teacher - she is very knowledgeable, calm, kind and has a lovely sense of humour. I have already bought a voucher for someone else to enjoy one of her classes.
