About Janealogy

Janealogy is a bit of a Sherlock Holmes! I apply my family history detective skills to tracing your ancestors. Finding and checking different sources and weighing up the evidence, I aim to solve your Scottish family history questions. But I'm not just a cool sleuth, I'm also passionate about family history.

Why me? Well I'm a thorough, careful and enthusiastic Scottish genealogist. I've been working on my own family history (Orkney, some Caithness, a tiny piece of Shetland and probably some Sutherland) for many years. Through my work experience in administration, teaching, information management, University student services management and projects over 30 years I've developed and honed many skills relevant to running a genealogy business. To take forward my learning and obtain formal validation, I completed the University of Strathclyde's Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Genealogical Studies in 2009 and 2011. My commitment to developing my skills has continued since I set up Janealogy in 2012.

So, let's get started! Just contact me with an idea of what you would like me to research. I will review this, check which documents you already have and agree a research brief and budget with you. Once the brief and budget are sorted, I ask for a deposit. When that's paid, work can start.

The research brief basically sets out what I'm going to research, by when, for what cost, how the work will be presented (electronic, hardcopy, charts and so on)and includes agreement on copyright and so on.

Living in Stirling, central Scotland, I have easy access to the major archive collections in Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as a range of local archives in Stirling, Falkirk, Perth and other places. I also love researching Orkney people.

Some clients want one or more lines fully researched so I look for birth, marriage and death information, perhaps starting with a great grandfather or mother and working backwards. The censuses, generally 1841-1911, add depth and there may well be other documents too. Other clients have a particular question they want me to answer or a brickwall to demolish. Whatever your query, my work is geared to what YOU want to find out.

Jane didi a very comprehensive and fascinating study for us of our Lithuanian grandparents, when they first moved to the Uk. She unearthed facts and relatives we had not known about. The way she put the information together was wonderful because she put it into its historical, context, the neighbourhood, other immigrant communities in the area at the same time etc. She made them come back to life for us.

A thoroughly professional genealogist, upfront about the cost (very reasonable), about what can or cannot be achieved within the budget and timescale, delivered ahead of time and in choice of formats. My brief was the family history of an Edinburgh woman tracing her maternal and paternal lines back to circa 1800 including a branch on Shetland. Family legend suggested a castle might come into the story, I always doubted this and how right I was - but nice to have it confirmed one way or the other. I strongly recommend Janealogy!
Response : Many thanks for your review. A very interesting family.

I asked that my maternal grandfather's family be investigated as previous genealogists had not found his great grandparents. Also to remove the confusion surrounding the different generations as many of them had the same surname. All this and more was revealed by Janealogy's report and we couldn't be more delighted. She has traced the different lines back with easy to read graphics and given explanations, with illustrations, as to their movements in the days before registration of births etc became compulsory.
Response : Many thanks for your review. I really enjoyed researching and disentangling all these people with the same surname.

At my first meeting with Jane Harris I saw that she had a firm grasp of her subject, and from a few questions she asked me, I was able to give her a brief to work to and at the same time to get an indication what the cost would be The results I was given in a short time was all I could have hoped for, so I would recommend her to assist you to trace your Family Tree.
Response : Many thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. Glad you were pleased with the results.

Jane met with me to establish the remit, which arrived as a contract the same week, laying out clearly what she planned to do and how much it would cost. Within a fortnight a thorough report arrived backed up with copies of all the relevant documentation. She had timeously and meticulously carried out a search which led to the discovery of a whole new side to our family and which, because of an illegitimate birth in 1857, I had thought was a 'dead end'. All very exciting. I can't thank Janeology enough!
Response : Many thanks for your review. It was great to break down a "brick wall" for you.

Janeology was responsive, speedy and imaginative in meeting my research queries. These involved quite tricky searches involving archives in Italy, making initial contacts there - thus easing my access to them when I visit there this year - and asking the right questions to cut through bureaucracy. She produced excellently written and concise summaries and reports of her research which will be invaluable for my own future sleuthing. I can recommend her without reservation. She also likes a challenge!
Response : Many thanks for your review. I really enjoyed doing your research.

I contacted jane prior to christmas to carry out research on my partners ansestors. From my very first consultation with jane I found her to be helpful, imformative and professional. Jane advised me of various options available to suit my individual requirements. She was able to advise me of particular pricing structures beforehand and explain what each package of work consisted of. Jane set out clear timescales in which she would work to and actually completed work prior to the agreed completion dates. Jane completed a contract of work that both parties agreed to with pricing structures which I found very helpful. Janes work was completed to a high standard, she was professional, helpful and clearly passionate about her work. My partner was absolutely delighted with the research that was completed. I cant recommend Jane's services highly enough and would encourage anyone thinking of having their family history researched to do so.Moreexpand_more
