So my laptop fails to start. I take it to ITVET (Bishop’s Stortford). Signs on the wall say ‘From’ £59 for repair. Low and behold, the price via the follow up phone call says ‘ er £99’. (How many start at £59…really? ). It was explained that the procedure had a ‘80% chance of success, but a 20% chance of failure’. With those odds, I explained that I wasn’t really interested. IVET rep explained that I could always bring it back as it would be covered under the 3 month warranty for the repair. He also suggested that there were “lots of viruses” on my laptop (despite having a highly rated anti-virus protection at the time. No diagnostic report showing me the problem by the way – I foolishly took the guy at his word).“We recommend BLAH, BLAH anti-virus”. I purchased it from them £29.99 (one p. C. Licence). The ‘repair’ failed within a week. I brought it back for a second time. A few days later, they rang to say said that one of the 3 boards needed changing. “£40 and that will do it”, they said. I agreed, took it home, and within 3 minutes it failed again. I took it back expecting a full refund, only to be told of the £29.99 failure charge (on their signs on the wall to be fair). However, in my defense, when I spoke to another rep after the first failure, I was assured that the failure charge didn’t apply because I would be covered under the 3 month warranty. After asking for a full refund, I was told also that the anti-virus could not be refunded either as it was a ‘under licence’ product or something, something. They have since sent me information about how I could use it on another product. I also explained at the outset that this was a critical issue for me. It turns out I was without the laptop for around 10 days or so. Essentially, these guys get paid whether they fix your item or not. A nice business model if you have little moral fibre.
