I wanted a quote for a new boiler and heating system because a) I think (very sure infact)there is a leak in the piping in the wall and b) I want to make better use of the space in my new house; the current, fairly old boiler is upstairs in its own room! DLM came round and seemed quite affable and qualified. He talked a great deal about the leak but decided that it would need to be looked at by someone else with more knowledge about damp, and buildings - fair enough, I thought. Infact he recommended a friend of his. Why a plumber wouldn't know as much as a builder I really don't know. However he then went round inspecting the boiler and heating system and tried to start doing things without explicitly saying it would incur expenses or even asking my permission to start. I had to stop him in his tracks. I had just wanted a quote and had been assured there was no call out charge. It is probably a big job and I want a professional and some advice. The man talked and talked and made me believe that by what he was proposing to do there and then(more talk talk talk) it would shed light on the leak in the pipes, so, slightly bamboozled I realise now, I agreed to a charge. However all he did was half turn a valve to adjust the pressure in the boiler saying that if it goes down again it is indicative of a leak. The only thing is. There quite obviously IS a leak, the whole upper wall downsatirs is getting soaked! It doesn't give me any help as to what to do about the leak, which I am quite aware of thanks. He took off the front of the boiler and told me it will only give hot water if the heating is on (well done - I had discovered that for myself thanks)and then he decided to bleed the radiators which DID NOT need doing and I had told him they work fine but the thermostats didn't - these obviously need changing but I wasn't asking him to do anything about those at that time. He charged me £40 and I didn't even get a quote for what I wanted and nothing has changed! I felt afterwards that he was after a quick call out charge and easy cash. I wouldn't have minded so much if he had just supplied what I was after, a simple quote to install a new boiler.Moreexpand_more
