About Clock Repairs at Horologica

Horologica offers an uncomplicated and uber friendly clock repair service for half the cost of a high street retailer, because it's the owner's personal hobby carrying few overheads.

Horology is the study of time measurement, and Horologica is the logical place to come if your mechanical clock has stopped measuring time properly. I repaired my first clock (a French striker) in 1974 but Horologica wasn't started until 2002, primarily with the aim of downsizing by selling off an accumulation of duplicate clocks from a collection. I soon began receiving repair enquiries from owners whose local clock shop had quoted more than the clock was worth just to service it. Horologica fills that gap in the market and breathes new life into tired family heirlooms for an affordable price.

Most types of clocks and barometer can be repaired, both antique and modern, but not pocket watches and wrist watches. And there's no need to be apprehensive about workmanship; clocks are repaired, cleaned and restored to the highest standard using the appropriate horological tools, techniques and equipment. All work carries the same 12 month guarantee offered by High Street clock repairers (and their sub-contract workshops). And new parts are sourced from the same reputable suppliers, although sometimes in older clocks missing parts may have to be designed and handmade from scratch.

Each finished repair is accompanied by a detailed written account of the clock's history and the repair or service carried out. Close up photographs are often provided to illustrate particular problems uncovered and resolved. And as evidence that the service has been done properly, a photograph of the clock in pieces can be included, which some owners like to display near the clock as a talking point.

Most clients are local residents within about 25 miles of Billericay but some extend into Kent and the Home Counties. A few come from much further afield, relying on Royal Mail for delivery and collection.

Valuation services are also offered - Horologica has more books on clocks than the whole of Essex Library and assists owners all over the world in dating and identifying makers marks.

Clocks and barometers are also bought occasionally, and a number of surplus clocks are always available for sale.

Back to Gordon again, this time to repair a very fragile broken hand from a lantern clock which he successfully soldered back and additionally made adjustments to the passing bell strike and chapter ring. Very professional as always, he always goes the extra mile.

Gordon has revived my 100 year old plus wall clock that had been dormant for many a year. It is now in it's 'proper' place, keeping excellent time and striking the hour and half hour like a very 'happy' clock… It does have character. .

I contacted Gordon with a view to arranging a repair to my clock but in our discussions he identified what was needed, which amounted to only a minor adjustment. Having a rudimentary knowledge of clocks gained at school many years ago, he was able to talk me through it. The clock has been running perfectly ever since. Many thanks for your help Gordon.

As someone who has zero DIY skills and no knowledge whatsoever of clocks, I contacted Gordon about my G/F clock that was chiming (on the quarter hours but) 10 minutes late! He identified the issue and gave me some advice how to 're-set' the collet in the minute hand plus some other general advice. I was not optimistic(! ) but managed, with a little help from a friend, to re-set it by 30 degrees required. It now chimes 4 times an hour perfectly! His advice, and especially his patience, was invaluable. .

Gordon serviced my little carriage clock- he carried out a sterling job, and I have no hesitation in recommending his service to others. He quoted a good price to do the job and kept to his word. Its hard to find craftsmen of this calibre these days and I am thankful I found him.

I phoned Gordon with a problem I was unable to sort out with my elderly granddaughter clock. He was extremely patient and talked me through the problem and hopefully the chimes will now work correctly. I will certainly contact him again if/when my clock needs some tlc in the future.

Made my antique grandmother clock whole again. Not the first person I tried but definitely the last and best.

I contacted Gordon for an independent opinion on what could be a relatively valuable antique in need of sympathetic economic restoration. I explained the situation with some photographs and asked for his opinion. He answered my enquiry almost immediately with an estimate based on minimum outlay required. This was all realistic solid advice. I have no doubt Gordon's passion is to conserve these delicate instruments. I have no doubt anything Gordon undertakes is carried out with the utmost skill and integrity.

I contacted Gordon after finding Horologica on Google and was delighted by his positive attitude. He fixed my Vienna clock speedily and efficiently, kept me well informed, his charges were very reasonable. I couldn't be more positive about his service. Outstanding!

I contacted Horologica about advice on a barometer and received a very helpful, friendly email back within 24 hours offering information and help. As I do not live that close to the shop, I have not been able to visit as yet but am impressed with knowledge and information provided so far. Please note that I cannot accurately rate value for money or quality as I have not had my barometer repaired as yet. This website will not allow me to only rate service - which is all I have experienced so far….
Response : Really disappointed by 3. 5 stars, Sarah - was this awarded in error? I've never had a review as low as this before on any Review platform in the whole time I've been repairing clocks and barometers. You agree that the service I provided was prompt, helpful and completely free, so I'm not sure what more I could have done to earn five stars. Where did I fall down?

I am most grateful to you for dealing with the problem I had with my mercury wheel barometer which was not providing the correct reading and doing it so promptly. It was a pleasure dealing with you and I would certainly recommend you to other barometer owners.

We had a problem with our old long case clock, which had stopped and the hour hand seemed to have jammed so we telephoned Gordon with a view to asking him if he would be able to repair and service it. However he very kindly took the time to suggest over the phone what the problem might be, and to tell us step by step how we might get it going again ourselves, and success! The clock is at present working once more. If it fails again, I will have no hesitation in asking him to service it. He was exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable.

I received absolutely first class information and advice over the phone on two clocks in my possession, couldn't have been better in any way. Very very impressed by the enthusiasm and interest in which my query - regarding fusee clock movement was answered, web-site also very helpful.

I was setting up my longcase clock after it had been in store for 2 years. The website was fantastic, gave me advice as to how to do this. I had a small problem the strike just kept on sounding, so I emailed asking advice. I was amazed to receive a call, following that I was confident enough to have another go and bingo my ancient clock is now working perfectly - many many thanks.
