For myself its important to feel completely at ease in a training environment, I don't want to feel judged I don't want to feel inferior and I don't want to be competing for competence. I feel there are many gyms where bravado rules, where complete beginners are more of a burden than their worth. This is absolutely not one of those places, I first attended as an absolute beginner and I was still welcomed with open arms. Now 4 months in I'll happily train with people with years of experience and beginners alike as there is always something new to learn from someone else, and yes even someone with zero knowledge of the subject (they may be super double jointed or 7 foot tall or have one arm) every one is different and what works well with some may not work for others. The training is predominantly given in form of a demonstration and then practice in a pair or a three with guidance from the fringes if necessary or just to help hone the moves. Practicality and real world scenarios are focused on more heavily than perfect technique for the sake of finesse. I wholeheartedly recommend this gym to train at, everyone is friendly and ready to facilitate your learning no matter what your background.
Ju Jitsu is a devastatingly effective martial art. I have been training at Bishop Challoner for over six months and I really enjoy every session. The age range of beginners attending is currently from 16 to 51 (me! ). The two current instructors teach from different perspectives. One is an excellent technician whilst the other is a no-nonsense streetfighter. This means we often see two different versions of the same technique, enabling us to find the best way that suits our own body shape and strength. The students are a mix of ages and occupations, but all have sensible heads on their shoulders, which is essential when learning throws, chokeholds, strangles, joint locks etc. After all, everyone has to go to work the following day. The social side of the club is excellent too. As well as the quarterly social events we have a couple of beers at a local pub after training on Thursday night, which is always a good hour or so. If you are thinking of learning a martial art, whether for self defence, fitness or weight loss, this is a great place to train. Excellent instructors, sociable and enthusiastic students and a healthy social side – what more could you want?Moreexpand_more
A great place to train! I have been training for over four months now and I completely love it. The instructors are very polite and helpful (even though they do throw you around - it is part of their job after all). The other trainees in the club are nice and willing to work in a group. If you are not comfortable/ready/or a girl, instructors are willing to hear you and assist you working on the developments which you desire to achieve. Value for money - Hell yeah! You get 90 minutes of intense workout (you can make it as intense as you like! ) for a lower price than a gym membership and you actually learn something new every session. Nevertheless, every session you get a chance to work with a different person (if you like) and apply the skills you have learnt on different bodies (we are all just training dummies) which helps you to prepare for whatever might happen on the street. Well recommended place, even if you are not sure if jiu-jitsu is your thing, give it a go in this place and I bet you, you won’t be disappointed!Moreexpand_more
Hands down one of the best martial arts clubs I've been a member of! I'd practiced martial arts before but was new to Ju Jitsu and from the get-go Richard (our chief instructor) and all the other members made me feel very welcomed, and immediately part of the group. All my training partners always work to my pace and comfort level, if I don't feel confident in doing a particular move they help me work on the basics and progress it slowly until I gain the confidence I need. Classes are never repetitive or boring. You're always learning something new and developing new skills. Would 100% recommend this club to anyone who wants to try martial arts whether you're a complete novice or have some experience.
Very welcoming and you feel like you're in safe hands. Very high quailty instruction from very experienced instructors. Went to try it out over 2 years ago and have never looked back. All the members are just as freindly. You get the first few sessions free to see if you like it and then you pay a very reasonale matt fee. Cannot praise the club enough.
I have now been a member for over a year. The open and relaxed atmosphere, makes it a great place to train. The coaches are great at simplify techniques for beginners and enhancing techniques for the more advance. They provide this service at the lowest price by far in the area. Just £3! I would highly recommend anyone, experienced or not, to come along!
I have joined the club in June 2013 and it is excellent. As a total beginner to any type of martial arts / self defence, the instructors and club members have been very welcoming and supportive. The trainers have a vast amount of knowledge and are happy to go through techniques as many times as needed. Brilliant way of gaining self confidence and as a female also, it is a great way to learn self defence. Come along!
Been a member of the Bishop Challoner Ju-Jitsu club for over 5 years and I have progressed not only within the discipline but also in confidence and being able to comfortably handle and protect myself. The staff are very knowledgeable and have a vast amount of knowledge between them so are always on hand to help you with your techniques. The facilities here are perfect for what is required and I couldn't recommend highly enough to anyone.
Having been a member of Bishop Challoner Jujitsu since October 2010, I can say that this is a fantastic martial arts club, well suited to everyone from beginners to the more advanced student. All instructors teach in a friendly and very effective manner. I would definitely recommend this club to friends and family. 10/10.
I have been at BCJC for over a year now, and I'm also one of the only girls that has consistently been at club, and I have never felt left out or uncomfortable. I have been treated just like everyone else and looked after to make sure I feel comfortable with close contact, ground work, etc. With the guys. All tutors are excellent at what they do. It's only £3 a session and it's certainly value for money. Whether your a beginner or have done another Martial Art, you will always be welcome here. Recommended without a doubt!
I've been a member at Bishop Challoner Jujitsu club since October 2010 and have enjoyed every minute of it. The facilities are great and all of the instructors are very very good at what they do. Also for just £3 a session it is definitely value for money. I would highly recommend this club to anyone interested getting started!
This is probably the best equipped dojo I have ever seen and the instructors teach to a very high standard but do so in a friendly and easy to understand way making it perfect for first timers to martial arts or people from different styels. If you are thinking of trying jujitsu male or female this would be the place to go the time I have spent there so far has been awesome.
As a qualified instructor of a different style of martial art I know how important it is that the student feels welcome, safe and confident in the ability of the instructors to allow the student to learn and grow in confidence and at Bishop Challoner Jujitsu Club ticks all the boxes and is exceptional value for money.
