History of Avon Tyrrell.
Back in 1882, Lord Manners won £28,000 in the Grand National with a horse called Seaman (you can see a picture in the dining room. ) Those winnings which are the equivalent of about £3 million today, were used to build this house which the family lived in until the second world war, where it was used by the army as an intelligence gathering post, hospital, morgue and as part of the D-day preparations Following the war, the house was put into a trust and given to UK Youth to support young people and it was officially opened by Princess Elizabeth who we now know as Queen Elizabeth II. Today, the house is 130 years old, it is Grade I listed, and it is a calendar house, there were only 6 ever built and this is the last one which means;
• 365 windows (days).
• 7 outer doors (days per week).
• 52 rooms (weeks per year).
• 12 chimneys (months).
• 4 wings (seasons).
