About Artisan Stitch

Recently rated 'Best Sewing Classes in Edinburgh, Artisan Stitch offers Sewing classes, Dressmaking, and Creative Textile workshops for adults and children.

Whether you are a beginner just learning how to use a sewing machine, or an experienced dressmaker wanting to learn Patterncutting or couture sewing techniques, Artisan Stitch has a class to suit you. Learn lots of expert sewing tips to give your sewing a professional finish. I also cater for those who are returning to sewing after a long break and perhaps need a refresher sewing class. There are also soft furnishing classes such as Cushion-making, and Curtain-making so you can freshen your home decor.

If you feel like being even more creative, there's Free-Motion Machine Embroidery, Applique, and Needlefelting as well. Creative Textile workshops include monoprinting, and mixed media techniques. So if you'd like to make gorgeous, luxurious new fabrics from scraps to turn into a unique evening bag, or some stunning embroidered jewellery, there's sure to be something for you.

Artisan Stitch is run by Jen Skedd, a lifelong sewist (since age 7), and degree-trained Textile Designer and Artist. Jen has over 4 decades of sewing experience spanning dressmaking, tailoring, bridalwear and couture techniques. She has sold knitwear designs to Italian fashion label 'Valentino' and high street chains. She exhibits embroidery regularly and many of her pieces have been bought by private collectors.

Jen can also give individual advice if you are having problems with your sewing machine or a particular sewing technique. Or are you considering buying a new sewing machine and need help in knowing what to look for, or want to get a feel for using a machine prior to buying one?

The classes are held in a lovely bright studio in St Margaret's House, London Road, close to central Edinburgh. Class numbers are small (ranging from 3 to 6 students) so everyone gets lots of individual attention in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Jen has been sewing for many years and has studied HND Stitched Textiles and Fashion, and has BA(Hons) degree in Textile Design. Jen has worked for a high-end cashmere manufacturer in the Scottish Borders and has sold knitwear designs to the Italian Couture House, Valentino.

She is a member of the Embroiderer's Guild and Group Twelve Textile Artists. She exhibits and sells her contemporary embroidery.

The studio is a bright social space. Come with existing friends for a girl's day out or come on your own and make new friends while you're here!

I had an excellent day attending a beginners sewing class last week. I met lots of lovely people (including Jen of course) and gained the confidence to go home and use my own machine. I am now very excited to try and make lots of clothes and accessories in the coming months. I would recommend Jen's courses to anyone wanting to learn how to sew. I am sure I will be back for more classes in the future….
Response : Hi Fiona, thanks for your enthusiastic participation on Friday. Glad you enjoyed your day. See you again soon.

I attended a rags to riches workshop in August. As with previous workshops Jen offers, I really enjoyed it - learned two techniques for using fabric scraps to create fabric panels which can be used to enhance a cushion cover or to incorporate into a bag - or can be fabric creations in their own right. Highly recommend this workshop!
Response : Hi Jenny, I'm glad you enjoyed the Rags to Riches workshop. I'm going to have to develop more creative textiles workshops as you've done almost all of them. Thanks for being so fun to work with and for your continued support for Artisan Stitch.

Went to beginners sewing - very clear teaching - made a tote bag (mine's in the middle). The following week I went to the free motion embroidery workshop and created a great picture. Both classes Jen was patient, concise and informative. Would highly recommend her workshops.

I was a complete newbie. Jen was supportive and helpful. She made the whole experience relaxing and positive, so much so that I immediately signed up for another class.

I attended Monoprinting for Stitch last Friday. In the morning we used acrylic paints to print on paper and fabrics and in the afternoon we made collages with our fabrics and enhanced them with stitch. Everything was supplied, including delicious chocolates nibbles to sustain us! It was great fun and Jen gave a lot fo individual help and attention. I’m a quilter but had no experience of printing. The course showed me techniques I could apply and gave me lots of ideas to build on and develop my own individual style. Thanks, Jen.

I attended Free Motion Embroidery class today. Had never even dropped the feed dog before today but by the end of the day I had a very impressive stitched herbaceous border and the confidence and knowledge to press ahead and practice at home. Definitely recommended.
Response : Thanks for your lovely review, Judith. Your stitched garden is gorgeous! Glad you enjoyed your day.

I had absolutely no experience behind a sewing machine before the beginners course and I came out of the course having made three items that I was very proud of. I thoroughly enjoyed learning from Jen and I was amazed how much she managed to teach me in just 6 weeks. I highly recommend this course and I am now completely hooked on the idea of sewing. Thanks Jen.
Response : Hi Kate, Thanks for taking the time to post a review. I'm glad you enjoyed the course so much and that you now love sewing. I'd love to see anything you've made since finishing the course. Best wishesJen.

I really enjoyed the Over Locking course I did. I already had basic sewing knowledge, but everything to date looks homemade, so my focus was on learning techniques, which a lot of classes don't teach. Jen was very well prepared, she brought examples of everything we were going to work on and sent follow up notes after the course. The course has saved me money already as I'm much more motivated to get things right and not waste fabric on things i'll never wear.
Response : Hi Joan. Thank you for that lovely review. I’m so glad you enjoyed the Overlocker class and have found it useful already. I always enjoy teaching that one as I can show techniques that most people would never imagine possible on an overlocker. Perhaps you’ll come back for the ‘Sewing with Knits’ class and construct a garment entirely on the Overlocker.

After moving back from living abroad one of my first goals was to try and find a dressmaking course and I came across Artisan Stitch during a google search. I did a series of beginner classes with Jen which provided a great foundation for me to leap into dressmaking. Jen is very patient, explains things step by step whilst allowing you freedom. I have continued to attend classes for over a year even after moving a considerable distance away. I thoroughly enjoy my sewing and have made various skirts, trousers and a dress as my skills have progressed. In addition Jen runs various other classes e. G. Christmas classes, felt making, free motion embroidery of which I have yet to try. If you are thinking you want to give it a go then do not hesitate in contacting Jen she will be able to suggest appropriate classes for you.
