About Alexander Heritage

Founded in 2012, Duane Alexander Home Improvements now Alexander Heritage has over 13 years of previous employed experience in the general building and home maintenance trade.

As we have developed our business over the past few years to specialise in the repair and maintenance of older buildings, generally pre 1919 we recently changed our company name to Alexander Heritage as this better reflects the type of work we undertake.

This work includes repair and maintenance of slate roofs, limework including lime pointing, stone wall repairs, joinery work on sash and casement windows, installation of brick vents / cast vents to improve ventilation and counteract condensation issues.

The company is based in Heysham, Lancashire. Now in it's 6th year of operation we have many satisfied customers and have many who return time and time again as we have a sound understanding of traditional buildings, how they were built and how to maintain the specialist elements that a traditional building has, as opposed to modern buildings.

We offer heritage building services to the general public with a small and personal team and operate from home. We understand that when someone takes on an older property that they are not always sure of what the best options are for its repair and maintenance. We are very passionate about using traditional materials, as older properties are constructed differently from modern properties you need a company who understands this and works with the building and not simply with the cheapest and easiest materials.

Alexander Heritage has a growing network of clients, located in the local area, including private home owners, landlords and businesses. We are one of only a handful of local businesses who are experienced in and willing to use traditional materials such as lime mortars, burnt sand mastics, sheeps wool insulation etc.

The company is managed by husband and wife team Duane and Jo Alexander. Duane has been working in the General Maintenance market for over 17 years. While Jo has 18 years of Environmental Health experience and through in-house training has become the companies main lime pointing operative, proficient in the hand mixing of hot lime mortars as well as their application.

We are focused on looking after the needs of customers. Being honest and fair with customers has been paramount to the repeat custom which we enjoy. In the past many inappropriate works have been carried out to older properties (e.G. Use of sand and cement in place of lime and non-breathable insulation) which often has caused more problems than it has solved, we can help you to better understand your traditional building and how best to maintain it or make appropriate repairs. Often what you think is a big issue e.G. Rising damp etc is merely a symptom of poor use, heating and ventilation of an older building and small changes and remedies can often improve the situation without being sold expensive 'damp proofing', wall injection or tanking products which more often than not cause even more damage to an old building and do not solve the underlying problem but just mask it for a while.

Old buildings need to 'breath', this occurs through the fabric of the building (stone, brick, lime mortars, lime renders and plaster) if you cover over these or fill their 'lungs' with silicones, solutions, cement mortars and renders, non breathable insulations etc you prevent that natural process and risk severe damage occurring to the property and the health of those living or working in it.

Duane has completed a Cskills Level 3 Award in 'Understanding Repair and Maintenance of Traditional pre-1919 Buildings and is experienced in working on older properties and the specific issues and problems that may occur with stone and slate built properties.

Jo has a Post Graduate Diploma (with distinction) in Building Conservation and Adaptation from UCLAN Preston and has undertaken the SPAB (Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings) Repair of Old Buildings Course.

With a small and personal family team, Alexander Heritage has a personal approach, and is time served and experienced in the services offered.

The advice and services offered are honest and the work is always completed to high standards, making the service perfect for anyone who wishes to maintain the traditional home they love.

We do not need to 'make work' for ourselves so we will only undertake work that is actually needed rather than make up works that are unnecessary.

Unfortunately we find that often we are trying to put right work that should never have been done e.G. Damp proofing interventions which were never needed as the actual issue was poor ventilation and condensation problems and not 'damp' or stone deterioration due to lime pointing being removed or over pointed with sand and cement which is too hard for the stone and which traps water in the wall.

The inappropriate use of 'energy saving' advertised products in historic buildings is a rising problem from bad insulation choices such as spray foam roof insulation that causes rot to roof timbers and often means that a traditional building is un-mortgageable to the injection of solid walls, home owners are bombarded with promises to 'weather proof' and reduce energy bills through poorly understood interventions. We can assist in helping you understand the better choices for your historic home.

It's my pleasure to recommend Alexander Heritage. Duane and Jo are incredibly professional, knowledgable, responsive and resourceful. They undoubtedly care about their craft and the heritage buildings they work on. Duane has done several maintenance jobs on our 19th-century, grade II listed converted school house this year. Each time, I'm impressed with the care and knowledge he brings to the tasks at hand. Most recently, and at rather short notice, Duane and Jo were able to resource and complete the removal of several layers of paint and varnish from a wooden beam in our children's bedroom. Duane went above and beyond for us, working two very long days to complete the job before the room was due to be decorated. The results are stunning, with the natural wood now able to be seen for the first time in decades. We are thoroughly pleased with the work and happy to recommend Duane and Jo at Alexander Heritage to anyone.Moreexpand_more

After a local recommendation I asked Alexander Heritage to carry out repairs and maintenance to a retaining stone wall. They are thorough, knowledgeable, reliable, tidy and honest. They kept me updated on plans and progress. They even carried out additional work on a slate roof while on site. Their work is of a very high standard, can’t recommend them enough and will use them in future. Excellent!

Duane and Jo have carried out several building renovation jobs on my stone cottage in the Heysham conservation area, including slate roof repairs, the replacement of timber fascia, lintels, guttering and rainwater goods, demolition and rendering. Of particular note has been the carrying out of a considerable amount of lime pointing of stonework, both inside and out. This has been done to an exceptionally high standard and, as always, with skill, expertise, care, conscientiousness and good humour. I can thoroughly recommend them, especially for work on historic and traditional structures, for which they have a genuine passion. I can thoroughly recommend them for quality work that will preserve and enhance your building for many years.

5 ? For all above as cannot recommend Duane and Jo Alexander highly enough, consistent, professional, punctual and even completed ahead of shedule and to my surprise invoiced me less accordingly! Duane and Jo were known to me due to work colleagues and well recommended! Having also seen excellent examples of their work within Heysham Village I asked to carry out property maintenance, clearing, making good guttering and moss removal from roof tiles, They completed ahead of schedule and to my surprise billed me accordingly, ( not many would invoice for less due to their own effeciecy! ). Being delighted with the quality of works I have asked for them to be my preferred choice as builders for a complex insurance claim, to remove and rebuild Extension and re-model interior. I'm obviously delighted and in future will definitely use them for any outdoor or indoor projects!

I can’t recommend Jo and Duane highly enough for their professionalism and trustworthiness. For years, I’ve been tiptoeing up my front steps, a long climb as the house is built into a steep hill. Paving slabs were loose, broken or sloped badly, and people refused to visit. Jo and Duane sized up the job, offered advice and worked carefully and thoughtfully in terrible weather conditions. The end result looked good and has been draining well, essential in frosty weather.

We first met Duane when he was working for another builder when we bought a house in need of much renovation, over 10 years ago. We were so impressed with him, personally and professionally, that he has always been our first call whenever we have needed jobs doing on the house. Duane has fitted new bathroom, installed a new kitchen, rebuilt a conservatory, and undertaken some drainage work - all on an old property with not a straight line or a right angle to be found in the building! He is extremely conscientious and thorough - when he has come across potential problems, he is good at explaining what the options are and different ways of finding a solution. He maintains very good communications - keeping in touch if materials are needed etc - and he did all the liaison with our kitchen suppliers for us, which was not a straightforward purchase. Duane will occasionally need to bring in other contractors to undertake specialised jobs or parts of jobs, and we have always found that they are people who share his outlook and high level of professionalism. We have always been very impressed with the work he has done and have and would continue to recommend him to anyone seeking a trustworthy, reliable and skilled tradesman.

Duane is a very conciensous worker and has a real passion for what he does. He is a pleasure to have around and does not make you feel uncomfortable as some people can. He has done lots of work on our property renovation of our kitchen, fixed the bath when it leaked at short notice, painted and pointed the exterior of our house plastered a utility area and fitted new door frames and doors as well as a renovation of our out-house. Highly recommended.

Duane has recently completed a number of small interior and exterior projects for me including an issue with damp, which he undertook with enthusiasm and skill. He does not relax until a problem is completely solved and concern for the satisfaction of customers is his priority. I have found Duane Alexander Home Improvements to be based on first class customer care and fair trading.

I desperately needed a new kitchen so asked Duane to have a look at it for me. He arranged for Magnets to come and design it for me with the units I had chosen. They gave me the photos of planned kitchen but had put far too many units for my needs so Duane redesigned it. He did all ordering, buying and fitting, getting a gas fitter and electrician to fit hob and extra sockets. He removed all old units and took them away then fitted new ones after blocking up a doorway into dining room. He also fitted a new double glazed window and back door, wallpapered, painted, fitted a blind, pictures and a concertina door on pantry. He always cleaned up after himself at the end of the day and I would recommend him to anyone needing work doing on their home. (PHOTO ALREADY POSTED ON SITE WITH PURPLE ACCENTS) Duane has also fitted double glazed windows to my bedroom and living room recently with same results.

Duane Alexander has recently not only completed both improvements and repairs to three of my properties in Lancaster but also planned and coordinated those works including liaison with other contractors such as specialist fully qualified electricians, plumbing engineers and the like. All those works have been done to a very high standard at a good price providing good value for money. All the work was discussed and negotiated with Duane always willing to listen and advise in a genuinely friendly manner; this was refreshing and appreciated very much. I've more work to be done on properties and without a shadow of doubt Duane is the man to go to and I have. Without hesitation or qualification, I recommend Duane Alexander and his business Duane Alexander Home Improvements to anybody and everyone. Yours sincerely. Robert W. McKittrick. Duane did much of the renovation work on my house before it was sold (his hard work ensured it DID sell), including; exposing and dressing a Victorian stone fireplace, removing walls and creating a new staircase bannister from scratch, repairing the roof, building my daughter a new bed, replicating cornicing and other original features to a very high standard. I find him amiable, trustworthy and highly skilled.
