I purchased one case of wine from Capital Vintners three years ago for £1800 'just dipping my toe in the water'. I decided to sell this case of wine recently, which is priced at £1540 after deducting the commission etc, the final balance is £1392. 64. If the storage charges are are taken into consideration this makes a total loss of nearly 25%, not the result I was expecting. I advise any potential customers of this Company to be aware of optimistic projections and hidden costs. In summary I am thankful that I only invested £1800 and will not be investing in the fine wine market in future. .
Unlike other reviewers, my experience with Capital Vintners has been poor. I have purchased fine wines regularly over the years from a variety of brokers. CV rank somewhere at the bottom! I explained when I bought 1 case which they recommended 4 years ago that this was a 'toe in the water' exercise to see how they performed compared to my other brokers. After protracted discussions over the 4 years where their answer was always 'buy some more stock', my patience finally ran out and I asked them to get a price so that I could sell. On the phone a broker checked the Liv-ex price as a guideline and that showed a modest increase for the 4 years of 13%. I requested the sale of the case. The formal offer came by email at 30% below the Liv-ex value and 21% below the original purchase price, also less commission of 7% and a stock condition report at £18. All in all the net payment to me was 30% below the purchase price. I know that stock condition reports are £8 each having had many of them done recently. A thoroughly bad experience. I would not recommend these people to anyone!Moreexpand_more
I have made several purchases this year from Capital Vintners and have been impressed by the proactivity and knowledge of the team there. They have been very responsive, as well as respectful - i. E. Not pushy! - in relation to potential purchases with which I did not proceed.
I have bought over 6 cases of wine from Capital Vintners in the last three years. With the Asian boom and the knowledge my broker gave me about the market, I was able to sell 3 of these cases last month at a profit of around 28%. I'm hanging on to the other three so that I can see some more profits in three year's time!
I bought 4 cases of wine from them and made £976 profit (28%). The broker new a lot about the market and I'd like to thank him for setting up my portfolio. Before I'd collected antiques and vintage cars and made a healthy return, but now wine is proving just as formidable. I would certainly raise a glass to them!
