A new martial arts school in Maidstone is offering families a kick start to the New Year, with a unique programme of fitness and self-improvement.

The WingTsun Martial Arts School of Excellence, in Queen Anne Road, off King Street, hopes to help stamp out bullying in the county town, by teaching self-defence and coping strategies.

WingTsun – is unlike many other martial arts, in that it focuses just as much on metal agility and tactics, as it does on fitness and flexibility.

And while WingTsun is suitable for men and women of all ages, it is ideally suited to families who want to learn a skill together.

Children and families experience great benefits from learning together, said principal instructor Lee Jacobs. The experience empowers them as a family and childrens confidence goes through the roof.

WingTsun improves self-esteem, as well as providing young people, in particular, with strategies to beat the bullies, he explained.

Lee, a black belt at karate, who taught self-defence and self-protection for Medway Council and is one of the official representatives for the Beat the Bully charity, has extensive experience running similar ventures in Rainham, Canterbury, Whitstable and Tonbridge.

He believes Maidstone is ripe for WingTsun, which teaches both self-defence and self-confidence.

Lee said: WingTsun teaches people to respect themselves and have respect for others. Using the body as a weapon - kicking and punching are used as a vehicle to develop the whole person.

In terms of a quick fix, martial arts don’t come much faster and Lee promises his students will notice a difference in as little as one week.

He said: the guarantee is that after just one session, people will have a better idea of how to defend themselves and have the necessary tools to take care of themselves in a range of situations.

Over a period of time, people learn that being able to do anything is a mind set. It’s just a question of removing the negative thought processes in the brain. Building the person from the inside out, not the other way around. Lee appreciates that people have busy lives and has tailored the class times to suit working parents and school children – classes take place primarily in the evenings and at weekends – although long term plans include offering lunchtime self-defence workshops for individuals and businesses in the town centre.

The school is offering a 50% discount on tuition fees for participants who sign up, just mention this site and will be running interactive taster sessions on Tuesday and Saturdays for anyone who wants to drop in and take a look at what is involved.
