Based in Bristol but with clients around the world, Helen Birkbeck Language and Editorial Services offers a proofreading and copy-editing service for anyone from students to big businesses, and for any kind of text, from letters and website copy to full-length books. As a languages graduate, I have a particular affinity with people writing in English as a second or foreign language, and do a lot of work on student and postgraduate essays and theses. I also translate from German and Norwegian, my degree subjects, and proofread translations from those languages. I am a freelance and work flexible hours, trying to accommodate my clients' needs as best I can. Proofreading involves checking basic grammar, spelling, layout and sentence structure and that the text follows the relevant 'house style' if there is one. Copy-editing includes all the above plus checking references and facts and advising on rephrasing if required or necessary. I work closely with each client to provide a service that meets their individual needs. I am a member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders and the Federation of Small Businesses. I have an MA in Modern and Medieval Languages and trained as a proofreader with the Publishing Training Centre. I do professional workshops and courses from time to time to update my skills.
