Emma Robinson - Traditional Acupuncture - AcupunctureTraditional acupuncture is a healing art which has been used for thousands of years to create and maintain health. By understanding and treating the cause of any condition, rather than just the symptoms, acupuncture can give long-lasting relief and a profound feeling of health and vitality.Emma Robinson practices classical five element acupuncture and is a member of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC). She graduated from the College of Traditional Acupuncture in Leamington Spa after three years of professional training. All members of the BAcC follow a code of ethics and are covered by personal indemnity insurance. She works at the Durham Complementary Health Centre in Carrville, Durham and also at Sweet Thyme Therapy Centre in North Shields. She is commissioned by the County Durham Primary Care Trust to provide a pain relief clinic for NHS patients at the Bishopgate Medical Centre, Bishop Auckland. Acupuncture for Health The main philosophy behind traditional acupuncture is that symptoms of illness arise when a personīs vital energy, Qi (pronounced chee), is not flowing as it should. Acupuncturists gently work with the Qi to give it as much quality, balance and flow as possible, the basis for long-lasting health and vitality. They identify and treat the unique cause of the problem so that improvements are long-lasting. Acupuncture is about treating a person as a whole - taking a person's body, mind and spirit into account. As illness can affect any of these, often at the same time, treatment also helps them all. Traditional acupuncture is very beneficial for mental and emotional issues and improvements are often felt across every aspect of life. Conditions which have been shown to respond to acupuncture include allergies, asthma, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and depression, stress, anxiety and panic attacks. It can help eczema, stomach problems, headaches and migraines as well as high blood pressure, sleep problems and chronic fatigue. It has been shown to help with fertility issues as well as other gynacological and menopausal problems. It is a safe treatment during pregnancy for issues which can arise such as morning sickness, back pain, headaches and anxiety. It is used to help many forms of pain including osteoarthritis, knee, hip, back and neck pain, sciatica and tendonitis as well as other musculoskeletal problems like tennis elbow, golfer's elbow and frozen shoulder. What's Involved As a Five Element acupuncturist, Emma Robinson will identify the cause of any problem and then provide treatment to remove that cause and support any inherent weakness. The style involves a very gentle needling technique and lots of patient-practitioner interaction so patients know exactly what is being done throughout the session. At the initial session, she will find out more about the problem itself, the patient's medical and family history, lifestyle and how their body functions on a daily basis. This helps with diagnosis and highlights any other areas which may need help to give profound improvements throughout. Traditional acupuncture uses very fine (about the width of a hair) stainless steel needles which produce a slight sensation but are painless. Moxa is a therapeutic herb which is warmed over specific points to provide a soothing heat. She may also use cupping therapy which uses mild suction to relax muscle tension. Because traditional acupuncture is about treating the person as a whole, she may provide lifestyle and dietary advice in order to increase the speed of recovery. People all respond differently to treatment. Immediately afterwards, patients often feel tired but relaxed, and then revitalised mentally and physically. Treatment is usually required weekly for the first month and then the frequency will be reduced in line with the improvements made - the goal of acupuncture is to help the body to help itself so treatment will be diminished as soon as possible. Patients will then either not need it at all or will choose to use it occasionally as a preventative measure.
