Countertenor and Chinese Lutenist - Musician

The Countertenor and Chinese lutenist Cheng-Ying Chuang is an award winning musician in both Chinese and Western classical music styles, offering solo voice and Chinese lutes (Liuqin and Zhongruan) music as a soloist, workshop lecturer, recitalist, ensemble and orchestra player. Cheng-Ying, who is currently based in London, was awarded a Master degree in music performance at Birmingham Conservatoire, UK in 2007 and has been in London providing music services since then.

As a Chinese classical musician, Chuang was the 1st prize winner of liuqin (Chinese lute) solo in 1991 and Chinese orchestra conducting in 1996 in Taiwanese Music Competition. As a Western classical singer, he won Taipei Philharmonic Foundation's voice competition in 2004 and the 2nd place of 2006 Oratorio Prize at Birmingham Conservatoire. He possesses a countertenor voice with warmth and power and was the only countertenor entered the final of every opera prize at school in recently years. He was awarded as the Young Star of the National Concert Hall in Taipei to sing a recital in July 2008.

Chuang provides his services as a soloist, ensemble player, singing/Chinese instruments teacher. Based on the knowledge of histories in Chinese/Western music, he opens to diverse cultures and aesthetics dialogues and is recognised as a professional musician in both Chinese and Western music in practice. He has been invited to hold workshops (from nersury/school workshops, library talks to University lectures) and performed in US, UK, China and European countries as a musician in classical and/or world music. He specially welcomes contemporary projects involving multi-disciplinary challenges.
