Wedding Photography

I was recommended this photographer by a friend for our wedding. I looked at her wedding picture gallery and was impressed by what I saw. When I contacted Jon Silver he said he was unable to attend our wedding himself, due to a prior engagement, but said we could have his assistant. When asked about the quality of his assistant's work he told me that a lot of the photography on his website had been done by him. I was happy with what I saw so went ahead. A few weeks before our wedding I had a call saying that he'd had to let the assistant go but that we could have another photographer instead, who was much more similar to Jon Silver's own photography. With little time left, I agreed to have him. Unfortunately when viewed later, the photography was poor, with many shots out of focus and the church interior shots dull and blurry - only 11 out of 45 were sharp, and those still had an orangey 'cast' to them. There were many other problems too, with awful wide-angle shots and no pictures of key aspects of the whole wedding (no pictures of guests arriving, or groom arriving, no pics of wedding car, flowers, etc). Friends and family who have viewed the online gallery have also commented on how 'snap-shotty' the photos are, and how disappointing.

We have written to the photographer listing our reasons for being disappointed, but have not yet heard back.

 Company Response :
As Sue said in her rather ungenerous and unkind "revenge" review, she knew from the outset she'd be getting an assistant, not me, and I gave her the opportunity to select another wedding photographer instead at that early stage. Sadly, I was let down by the assistant who was going to cover the wedding, with only just over a week to go. Andrew stepped into the breach, met with Sue and Jon in person at their home, giving them ample opportunity to go over how they wanted the event covered.

We always warn couples getting married in church to speak to their clergy beforehand and to ensure that the photographer's way is cleared. However in this case Andrew was prevented from standing near the couple, despite Jon's own father being the clergy in question, leaving the balcony at the rear of the church the only place to go in order to get good shots without getting in the way. Despite the distance, Andrew managed to get shots of, for example, Sue giving Jon his ring, which are sharp at 100% magnification whereupon both bride and groom fill 80-90% of the screen.

Lighting conditions inside churches are always difficult. I spent a week editing Andrew's photos, and we felt that the warm lighting was a feature worth keeping. If Sue disagreed, she only had to say, and I would have made the necessary changes. In fact she has the raw originals together with all my edits, and with her knowledge of Photoshop (she's a graphic designer) she could make the appropriate colour temperature adjustment herself in seconds. The vast majority of the photos taken inside the church are sharp enough for printing at most sizes up to around 12"x8", and cover the entire ceremony.

Technical errors were made by Andrew, as indeed even I make technical errors shooting live action, but the vast majority were correctable at the editing stage, and were indeed corrected. As for the elements Sue feels are missing, the 288 selected photos from a total of 306 images captured in the three-hour booking, cover arrival at church, entrance, full ceremony, signing the register (live and posed), exit from the church, photos outside the church (formal/posed and informal reportage), meeting and greeting friends & family, kids running around enjoying themselves, closeups of the ring, and full coverage of the picnic at Box Hill.

Anybody who would like to see the photos would be welcome - I'd include one or two shots here but Freeindex doesn't allow it; what you will see is a very different body of work to the one that I, or indeed any other wedding photographer would have produced, but one which stands as a very competent and worthy coverage of a modest wedding, as always in less than ideal circumstances. They're far from mere snapshots, and if these had been my wedding photos, I should be very pleased that my wedding had been covered in such a sensitive and competent way.

I went to Southdown Studios for my Hen Night Party for a make over and photo session. I want to say a massive thank Jon and the two makeup artists for helping make my hen night an event I will never forget. You all made us feel so welcome and so at ease, so that we could enjoy this fantastic experience. I’ve already had a look through all the photos and they all look amazing! Thank you for making me look gorgeous for the first time ever!!!!

My daughter says the whole package was brilliant fun and a great way to celebrate her 16th with her friends. Even the least confident girls blossomed in front of the camera when gently coaxed. Amy and her friends are now choosing their free photos from the website gallery and they have lots of lovely ones to choose from.

As a package it's not cheap, but we were happy with what we got for the price. My daughter's make up was rather strong to start with, but when we asked to have it toned down they were very obliging.

My 13 year old now says she wants the same for her 16th!

Good at creative angles and taking dynamic shots in an office setting. Also can do sympathetic head and shoulder portraits - we all liked our photos! Gave good value for money by doing some extra branding shots as well, which was outside the original brief.

Before attending Southdown Studio photo taking wasn't exactly my favourite subject! But Jon made me feel at ease helping me out with different positions and not rushing me. I came away with 6 photo's which I was very pleased about and found hard to choose! I'm sure I will be buying more and I will definitely recommend him to other people.

Thank you!

Jon's relaxed though professional attitude put me at ease and made the whole experience enjoyable as well as highly productive.

I've not only got some excellent publicity shots I need for my business but I also now have some amazing personal photos of myself that have brought out qualities in me I thought I had lost with the passing of time and some I didn't even know I had!

A priceless experience and a terrific personal development exercise.

Thank you Jon!

My sister and I visited Jon at Southdown Studio to have a photo taken for our Mum. The session was fantastic, we both felt very comfortable and were pleased that we were not forced into cheesy, unnatural poses. The results were brilliant and we struggled to chose a favourite. Our Mum is very pleased with the photo and both my Sister and I would recommend Southdown Studios.
