Italia Conti Associates Chislehurst is a growing business that provides Acting, Singing and Dance Classes to customers throughout the local area. The business, which is based in Bromley, was set-up in 1995 and has over 12 years in Chislehurst, plus the head of the school has over 30 years experience in the Performing Arts Business as the Head Teacher and Vice Principle of the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, which is the oldest theatre school in England, dating back to 1911.

The Italia Conti Associate School in Chislehurst provides Saturday part-time classes in Ballet, Tap, Modern, Jazz, Musical Production, Acting and Singing to young people aged from 3 to 18 years. They do frequent productions and the students, called Associates, may audition for professional representation by the Italia Conti Agency for work in television, theatre and modelling. In addition they provide Thursday evening classes in ISTD Modern and Tap for those in Grade 6, Intermediate and above standard and in Modern Jazz and Street for those of secondary school age. For information on this term’s timetable and fees please visit their website. The parent support group ‘Backstage’ organises theatre trips, barbeques and support for shows. The Saturday pupils take as few or as many classes as they wish. Several opt for syllabus classes where they may take ISTD examinations in Ballet, Tap and Modern, LAMDA examinations in Acting and Verse and Prose and even GCSE Drama for those in Year 10. New examination Trinity and LAMDA syllabi in Musical Theatre are being considered and may be introduced soon. With the exception of syllabus grade classes the pupils are generally grouped in narrow age bands, 3 to 5, 6 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 and 13 and 14+ years to ensure that children are continually challenged and that the nature of work covered is suitable to their age. Most classes are one hour long whilst some are 30 minutes for lower grade or younger pupils. Associates are invited to audition for scholarship assistance to join the full-time Italia Conti Theatre Arts School and for the government’s Dance and Drama Award scholarship scheme for places on the three year Performing Arts Course and of course, for fee paying places.

Italia Conti is a byword in theatre Training. They have been preparing performers for the entertainment industry since 1911 in their full time school and college. Concerned by the huge range in quality of pre-vocational training available the Academy established a number of part-time schools during the 1990’s. These now number over a dozen and are generally run by professionals with close links to the Academy.

The Principals of the Chislehurst Associate School are Cliff and Sue Vote. Cliff has been with the Academy for over three decades as the Headmaster of the 11 to 16 Theatre Arts School and Vice-Principal of the Academy. He also inspects for the Independent Schools Inspectorate and is an elected Director of the National Council for Dance Education and Training. He is supported by Sue who has had a number of careers in computing, administration and education which she has worked around her role as mother to two children. For the last twelve years the administration of Italia Conti in Chislehurst has been a full time job.

Some four hundred young people join them each Saturday to use the excellent facilities of Coopers Technology College in Chislehurst. The vast majority come for recreational purposes to enjoy themselves learning new skills, making new friends and generally exploring those aspects of theatrecraft which appeal to them or for which they have talent. Some take classes as a route to full-time training and each year a number graduate to courses at either the main school or one of the other colleges in the field or go on the study dance or drama as part of their university degrees. The vast majority do not aspire to careers in entertainment but use the skills learned and confidence developed to support their progress into the adult world.
