Which Keywords are Profitable for You?

With AdWords there is one REALLY IMPORTANT thing you need to know: which keywords are profitable for you?

All the other keywords will at best break even, and at worst cost you a lot of money.

You might think you know which keywords are profitable for you, but if you think Google Analytics or Google AdWords is telling you, then you're wrong (unless you've take some additional 'intermediate-level' steps).

Google Adword's reports don't give full keyword performance information, but they can tell you which ads are making you the money (note that's *ads*, not *keywords*). To do that you need to use conversion tracking which tracks the goals of your website, like making a sale, or someone viewing your 'contact us' page. I'll expand on this another time, but for now just follow the 'conversion tracking' steps from your main Campaign Management page. This will give you a little bit of script code to insert onto key 'conversion' pages of your website. Once you've done that you can track 'conversions' from your main AdWords account pages. A similar thing can be achieved in Google Analytics by setting 'goals'.

Google is *not* very helpful at identifying the actual keywords that are profitable for you. You can't get this information from AdWords: the reports do not give full detailed information on keyword performance. If you turn to Google Analytics, that will tell you what AdWords keywords were triggered, but not the *actual* keyword that were searched.
It's a subtle difference, but a very important one.

How to Lose Money with AdWords Defaults

Let's say you set up a keyword 'clean room' in your AdWords account. When you did this, you were thinking about 'a cleanroom environment'.
By default AdWords gave you 'broad' matching, which means it shows your ads on related searches - not just exact ones.
Here are two example searches that triggered your ads:

- 'someone to clean my room for me'
- 'perspex clear chairs'

Not much to do with a 'cleanroom environment' is it?

You can see why the first one triggered an ad (and you would probably do something about it!), but the second one triggered probably because 'clear' might be a mispelling of 'clean'. That's far too broad a match for my liking. This is a real example by the way.

Now, the bigger problem is that Google shows those two searches as 'clean room' in Google Analytics, because that's the AdWords keyword that was matched. So if you haven't modified Google Analytics you might be blissfully thinking that 'clean room' is working well for you, when in fact it's just costing you money.

The good news is that you *can* modify Google Analytics to show you the actual searches and I will be showing you how to do that right here, soon. It involves setting up a new website profile and a filter or two.

If that sounds too challenging, I can do it for you as part of an AdWords Healthcheck (£47) FREE - No strings attached.

If you start a new account & AdWords Management package with me then I can give you a free Google AdWords voucher / coupon / credit worth £50 (more for large accounts). I can also provide free £30 AdWords vouchers with no strings attached - but I don't get too many of these, so my non-monthly customers get first refusal.

Note that AdWords vouchers can only be applied to fairly new accounts, but you can always start a new account even if you have one already.

One last word, for now, on AdWords defaults: by default Google will show your ads on the content network (other people's websites that have agreed to show ads in return for a share of the ad revenue - called AdSense). You need to be careful with this. Ideally you should use the 'placement' option to make sure your ads are shown on good, useful, profitable sites - like FreeIndex.

Advertising on FreeIndex

The adverts you see on FreeIndex are AdWords ads created for the 'content network' (people's websites) - as oppose to the 'search network' (the search result pages of Google and its search partners). The best way to get ads on to FreeIndex is by using the AdWords 'placement' option, this allows you to target specific websites like FreeIndex. I place AdWords on FreeIndex for some clients and it is easy and affordable for me to add more. Contact me for details if you are logged in or Send Me an Email.

A Little Bit About Me

I spend all my time managing AdWords accounts for small and large clients; I also provide SEO consultancy. I can provide an AdWords package to suit most pockets, from micro-business through to corporate customers. I don't get out much.

I specialise in attracting good quality, affordable, highly targeted traffic to websites. That means people that *want* to buy your product or service - not just browse and leave. Do this right and you will have a 24x7x365 salesman working for you.

I help people as much as I can for free, this is mainly on FreeIndex in the Business Advice section. Helping one person publicly hopefully helps many more indirectly.
