My business is supplying makeup brushes to colleges and beauty salons in the UK. As a relatively new business I was surprised and delighted to receive an order from a huge cosmetics company; every part of the process went smoothly and I was given an amazing testimonial.

I want to use this information and testimonial to promote myself and don't know what first steps to take.

Please advise! Thanks, Kate

It's a matter of taste to an extent. I see you have gone to town with it on your website, which is fine. (Incidentally, do you have permission to use their logo? Elizabeth Arden's lawyers may not have the same rosy view of you as does Ms Taylor and, even if they do, it is courteous to ask first.)

If you're planning on producing some marketing material, you can quote it on that - even the final sentence is excellent, though I would give it as "Pro Makeup Brushes met our exact requirements... and we have no hesitation in recommending Pro Makeup Brushes to future customers as specialists in this field." The words I've replaced with an ellipsis make the sentence unclear.

If you want to draw people's attention to the testimonial specifically, I think you need a PR firm. Doing your own PR can be very inexact - and you don't have the contacts you need to send your message to. Not that employing a PR firm is a guarantee of success.

Otherwise, I would just ensure you slip it into the conversation with every potential client.

Hi Kate,

Firstly congratulations - you certainly seem to have found a fantastic niche. Your question actually raises several more - how did they hear about you, what did you have that they wanted, how did you convince them that you were a reputable supplier, was there an individual connection (did someone know you) etc. Also, if you have something unique have you protected it with patent or trademark?

However, to answer your specific question, the best way to make maximum use of the Testimonial is to turn it into a story with all of the proper elements, situation, problem, crisis, solution, happy ever after.

I will show you how below, but I am making some assumptions - you will have to change the story to fit what actually happened.

Situation

There was a major cosmetics manufacturer.

Problem

They needed to find someone who could (eg fulfil an order accurately and quickly within their budget.)

Crisis

If they could not get this then they would (eg lose a major order with a bond street shop)

They needed someone who could (eg step in and look after the whole process for them including.....)

Solution

I did this for them (note - do not say more than this)

Happy ending

And they gave me this fantastic testimonial.

This will help to make maximum use of the testimonial both when you use it in material and when others tell your story and it would increase the chances of the media picking it up and giving you free PR because that is what they always want - a story.

Good luck

Tony

Kate,

Well done. Attention to detail and intelligent responsive service are differentiators in business.

As Tony details in his excellent response above - tell the story, bring events to life. Write the case studies yourself, develop a style and structure that works for you.

Once you've mastered case studies, build a PR database of media contacts in your industry and learn how to write press releases. You know your own industry and business best and you have the passion.

Here are some examples:

Case studies

Press releases

Best wishes, I know that you will do well.

Hi Kate.

We think its a great story and we would like to publish it on the homepage of FreeIndex. My colleague mentioned it in a meeting this week. If you can summarise the whole story in under 50 words we will publish it on the homepage of the site.

Well done
Martin

Hi Kate.

Yes, congratulations - very well done indeed! You have some great responses from my colleagues here already.

What sort of business are you building? Is the plan to do mainly internet based or retail in the traditional sense? Another possibility is to use all media tools available. So for example to offer your products online you may want to think about producing a video or mp3 recording where your clients speak about how your product has changed their world, profits, work etc.

Wishing you lots of continued success.
