Hi everyone,

With the media and popular blogging sites constantly reporting on how important mobile devices are for accessing online content these days I thought I'd ask the Freeindex community whether people have or are considering having a mobile version of their website?

I'd like to get feedback from real people rather than from blogs that are reporting on corporate findings and business dealings.

We don't have a mobile version of our site at present, but we are working on one and hope to have it completed before the end of summer (if everything goes according to plan and our work schedule allows).

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Ian

Hi Ian

For now; The best measurement is to look at your clients analytical data before deciding on whether to go mobile or not.

Google Analytics has a section which identifies visits from mobile phones, mobile browsers and the carrier networks.

I recently carried out a review on a number of my clients sites and found that those selling products online, had significantly more mobile hits, than those just selling services.

One client in particular had received around 3000 hits per month from mobile devices, desktops hits were approx 50000 per month.

If you see a high number of mobile devices accessing your site, it is worth considering a mobile optimized site.

The design specs are different and conformance to standards is critical, you can test your mobile sites here http://validator.w3.org/mobile/ and this site is useful at the design stage http://preview.offermobi.com/preview/frames/

You can also configure your server to automatically display the correct version of your site dependant on the device type which is being used.

Hi Ian,

That’s a very interesting question and a good answer from Lee. I think it is also worth considering the rate which mobile technology is improving. The latest phones are now capable of viewing a large percent of websites as you would on a desktop computer or laptop although this is not the case for all websites it is something to consider.

There are several aspects which you can consider when designing a website to make it mobile friendly without having to have a completely separate version of your site.
  1. Make the main content of your site within 960px as this is the general viable area on mobile devices.
  2. Optimize images; compress your images to the size you need before uploading them instead of resizing on the fly. Remember load time is important on mobile devices.
  3. Keep flash to a minimum, although some mobile devices are now compatible with Flash a large majority are still not able to display it. For many areas where you would use Flash an alternative such as JQuery could do the same job.

Hi My Site is now mobile viewable
I have added a redirect code in the homepage that
detects mobile devices viewing the site and redirects it.
I will trial it for a while and see what happens
at least it is all in one pot so to speak so no extra cost for .mobi site.
