This is a well-known scam , but it's doing the rounds again. You receive phone call saying the caller is from  or linked to the emergency services. There's a variant on buying an advertising space in a magazine issued to all members of these services.( Called The Blue Light/Lamp or something similar.) Or you're told any space you buy will be to benefit children's and/or cancer charities. Don't be taken in by pleasant  plausible chat. We've had 5 phone calls in as many days, with the same spiel just different names

won't go into too many details because Police and trading standards are involved but  don't get into conversation with these callers, just say you don't respond to cold callers. They get your details from business directories and think because you're a new business, you'll be tempted to advertise in a widely issued publication of that nature. DON'T !!!

I received a call from 'police initiative yesterday' . Checked them out on google after the first call so was able to tell them where to go on the follow up call. The slightly disturbing aspect is that as a brand new startup, not actually started trading yet, this site is the only one where I've registered the sort of information the guy had. I understand that sites have to sell your information to make money but wish they would be careful about who has access to it. If it came from another source then I apologise to freeindex. The point remains valid though, I have only given my info to reputable companies, yet within a very short time it is in the hands of these scammers. Be vigilant, be safe.

I have had a call from a blocked number today from a very friendly CSO called Jeff regarding their "Street Scene" magazine which he claims will be distributed to 48000 in my local area.  This was followed up by a call from a Liverpool number asking me for card details immediately and as reported above saying I was entering into a verbal contract.

The graphic design compay requesting my details are Mode PR. http://www.modepr.co.uk/magazines

I think I will go into my local police station in the morning and request a copy of the Street Scene magazine Jeff told me my advert would appear in.  See what it's like.

Also as regards a verbal contract - surely this would only be the case if the publication is legitimate?  I would have entered into a verbal contract to have an advert put into a publication distributed to 48000 homes and pay for this service.  If it turns out that this is a scam they will be in breach of contract so I wouldn't need to worry.

it is most deffinately a scam as i have had repeat calls claiming that the firstly the magazine was being sent out to me (12 copies and still not arrived) the next call saying its in the editing process and they will email me my ad so i can make any changes to it (still no email). Then another call asking for my payment!!!!!! also had numerous phone calls from other people claiming to be from police force and giving the same spiel
