Is it worth paying for leads from Service Magic?

Has anybody used Service Magic ?

Pretty cheap for leads for my line of work, which on the flip side slightly worries me...

6

I have used them, but cancelled after three months. You get charged for all leads, they will allow you to reject some for say distance, ie I was offered a few leads 100 miles away and they cancelled the automatic credit card charges, however when on holiday, I had a lead and they charged me for it, despite informing them that I was unable to respond to this offer, as they had arranged Energy Performance Certificates with other leads, so I cancel my account on principle - why pay for leads to old to follow, however some of the blame was my own fault I do admit!!

You have to respond fast to any leads, as YOU are NOT the ONLY LEAD to be offered the Customers name, so you are still competing with other Service Magic clients, and local people as some are from other websites .

You have to give them your credit card details and allow them to automatically charge you via the credit card for any leads, regardless of whether they bring in money, or not! So my advice is not to use them!

I sussed them right away by their strong selling tactics as we know they are the other half of a site like Freeindex but after that they aint. I thought why not sign up to all the Freeindex type site then I got hit the sales pitch "we will find you work" or in other words we want a cut because we put you in touch I said no thanks it has all been a mistake I think I will stick with Freeindex but no they started sending me jobs and they were not even in my area and if they were I would not touch them as it is hard enough to make a living but having a middleman you just know this aint going to work so after 3 emails and 2 calls I was polite enough to to reply to each email saying no thanks get me off your list and if you keep sending these i will reply with the same answer because I do not want billed 6 months down the road Dont get me wrong this business model may suit others but I am happy with Freeindex I like this business model it works for me and there is no nasty surprises down the road and if there were to be then fine get me off I will go elsewhere

3

I have found a few websites that charge you for leads "My hammer" is another big one, a charge to register, another for a lead and % charge for a closed job!

None of that nonsense from free index this site is the best!. building a tightly knitted business community for the benefit of all it is a valuable and regular source work for me great!

well done team keep up the good work!

Kind regards

4

I used service magic, but everything has to be paid for, and also I found I was paying for leads then visiting the customer to estimate to find they were only at the thinking stage, and the job might be several months away if at all.

5

My advise stick with free index!

this site is just the best you need to persevere though it does take time but for me anyway has become one of the most important sources of work well done team keep up the good work merry christmas to all

and have a very prosperous New Year!

Kind regards

Service magic are the biggest con I have ever come across

1, keep sending leads that do not work

2, tempt you to buy credits £200 with what turns out to be a refundable lead £10 but then you are signed up and spent your £200 no way out!!! 15months later still never actually had 1 job that worked

its a Con the credits also are time limited so when all you get are worthless jobs about 50-60 miles away for a £30 job its a con service magic is like all magic they make things disappear usualy your money

1

As I said before Freeindex is the best business model I have seen the site is well laid out when people do a search in their area Freeindex pops up mind you you have to work for it as years ago you would get recommended from existing customers who would tell the guy next door but now we live in the virtual world where people tell me I read your reviews and did not bother putting in a business lead so I would like a quote please and because I am very aware of customer focus and service it is a 2 way street. Sadly there will always be a company who thinks it can profit off your back and in some cases if they are getting you work then fine but the problem is they want money from you for giving you a quote even although the job is outside your specified area fo me this is stepping over the line and playing on the weak.

So Freeindex keep doing what you are doing because it works and like Facebook ,Twitter, Google the more established you get you will rise to the top of the pile. So anybody reading this remember there is no such thing as easy money only a Fool with his money so put the effort in because when it is all said and done it is good customer service that keeps you in business.

Hi all I believe that there is a 14 day cooling off period for buying online does anybody know the details if true then when someone realises that service magic has conned them they should be able to get their money back if within the 14 days.

hope that helps someone out there

Hi Again

if you have paid by credit Card you can recall any payment although a little Harder to do these days your Bank/card company now need you to fill in a form but it does work

regards to all.... Happy new year!

We live in a world where anybody with a computer thinks they can set up a system and watch the money roll in. Don't get me wrong you have to be in the virtual world and there is no going back plus you have to utilise what is available because starting up and running a business is not easy I myself when I started on Free Index was a bit green but once I got into it then its off you go. Although I would say that applications like Free Index are to be used as an addition on getting your name out their I still use flyer's but advertising in local mags is a no no because after 7 months in business I found it just did not work and I only got one job in that only paid for 20% of the advert the bonus with Free Index is nothing ventured nothing gained and it is reassuring you are not getting a continual sales pitch or any surprise bills.

The only thing is that there is a few companies out their who have the power to pay for top listing and in my game if anyone can remember in a episode of Watchdog a company charged £360 to replace a lighting pendant when local Joe ie me would have done for £60 plus a cup of tea and a custard cream

3

I have found that despite having good reviews on freeindex I have a less than 5% success rate when responding to leads on here. I think the concept is fantastic and the fact it is free is it's best asset and the reason it will remian the most popular.

Having been contacted by service magic they are now sending me 4-5 quote requests for my local areas every day! However as I havent given my c/c details I am not sent any contact information.

I am tempted however to trial it for a month and see if I can convert any of these requests to business. Has anyone had any success???

My issue with freeindex is that I cannot make the widget with cust reviews work on my own company website www.ceiservices.co.uk and neither freeindex or my host seem to be able to help me. It's frustrating and combined with the low job lead conversion rate is making me consider other options.

I'd be interested to hear some of your thoughts/opinions on anything I have mentioned.

Thank you.

Do not bother with Service Magic they will keep sending what looks like very interesting work as said before the magic is in the fact that they make your money disappear

I still have 5 £10 credits left and my 18months is nearly up so they are then out of date as far as I know they are at present are sending up to 5 jobs a day most over 40-50 miles away and at last I have 1 within 15 miles that may result in work if it does the £200 I spent to get the first false lead may be partly recovered I have tried 14 times before to actually price for work, yes just price!! but to no avail so I have little confidence that the 15th attempt will gain anything at all so do not bother with them

Nick

Sorry to hear about your widget problem I to had the same but must admit I was at fault but now I have the reviews widget on both of my sites and when i got a review award I managed to do that as well but only after realising that i put the HTML code in a box that was too small.

Mind I use MS Publisher to build both and I have heard critics of this but it works for somebody of my mature years.

Getting back to Service Magic I just want to say is what works for you ie flyer's , adds, Freeindex, website after all you are your own boss and you have to evaluate what works for you in your area. As we now know with the banks any business that is sales driven is in my view switching people off and its not just Service Magic some of the big national lets say energy companies are turning their people into salesman when they should be focused on good customer service. I will leave you with this an old lady who is going senile had her gas appliances cut off because she was told they were not safe her family took her in and that was the week we got the big freeze yep you guessed correct her house got flooded and everything got destroyed. Why because in my view it was to pressurise her to get a new system and the in my view the gutless technician should be ashamed of themselves

It is no wonder why Joe Public is confused

Hi Nick

Free index does work you must persevere it takes time. look in every day and respond to postings

my own success rate is not high but that said i have had some good work including a regular customer have you filled out your profile completely? uploaded pic's etc, no such thing as a free lunch or the answer to our prayers.............. Loads of work!!

we are in a deepening recession that is hurting everyone of us! perseverance keep going after jobs if you only get 1 in 10 its worth it

Hi scott, I know this is an old post but i have to tell you that i have just stopped using service magic

I started with them in september 2010 and they started sending me `leads' straight away I was being charged £5.00 +vat per lead..... the very first lead they sent me was 85 miles away so i e-mailed them and told them it was to far and not cost effected, No response this happened time and time again even when I sent them a list of All the post codes and Areas that i will work they still kept on sending Rubbish leads and charging me the pleasure...i was refunded a couple of times but when i sat down and worked out what i actually earned and what i was paying them I WAS LOSING OUT big time, so i sent them a e-mail explaining that i no longer wanted their services with the time and date, and to add injury to insult they stopped another £10.00 for my account. so to all out there be warned,

Hi have you checked with trading standards...?

they have a website and a page listing the most shady companies, maybe you should get together and complain they will certainly investigate them, Money is hard earned these days it makes my blood boil when i hear stories like this grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

best of Luck

In defence (a bit) of service magic. The lady I have spoken with said that I could specify exactly the mileage from an exact point (postcode, address etc) that I wanted to receive leads from within. e.g. within 20 miles of ca13, my postcode in Cumbria. She assured me in writing that if I ever received leads not from within the agreed radius or leads which are clearly fake/prospective, or lead types I had not requested then I would not be charged.

I guess I was worried about her going awol or all the leads just being fake more than anything. You guys seem to have had other bad experiences tho so I think were all best of focusing on freeindex and spreading the word about it's brilliance!

If anyone can give me a step by step guide to putting my widget into my 123reg website www.ceiservices.co.uk i'd be eternally grateful!

Cheers

Nick

I to specified the post code areas I could cover, but to no avail jobs for fitting a light 40-50 miles away sure there must be someone local to the job who gets them via the leads sent but what good are they to all the rest and who knows how many are sent and to whom. From what I see they make a lot of money for absolutely nothing. Well enough people complaining may encourage some kind of rogue traders type investigation but how could they be policed I know they are dishonest but how could that be proved trading standards sounds like a good start well suggested.

Service Magic are a Con

and I have emailed them and told them that is a fact

so do not use them spread the word by all means possible save tradesmen money and pain

Well it looks like for me anyway to get intouch with Trading standards and put in my twopennys worth, if it help others not being ripped off then im all for it, and I am happy with a site that helps you!! FreeIndex thanks, but to answer Nick when i started with service magic i TOLD them i will not travel to london and wanted my work in essex, but that fell on deaf ears and i think its because the personnel that put out the leads change all the time, but that's my opinion, i hope that this will help others and thanks to Phil, Nick, and Kevin for replying. Work Hard but Be Safe.

They do provide quite a few leads but the quality of the leads are generally poor. A lot of the time the customer doesnt want an exact price or has already been bombarded with tradesmen. Unfortunatley you have to pay for the lead anyway and it is really hard to get that lead recredited. They also tend to ignore emails if its about refunds and also do not return phonecalls.

The principle of thier site is brilliant but they need to except that the general public are keen to mess others around.

Also the bad side of thier business is that they sell the lead to at least 5 tradesmen so you could be trying to compete with un-ethical and illegal workers.

Allegedly they check out your insurance and recommendations but to date they havent contacted any of my clients.

I have actually today suspended my account until I get back the cost of 5 leads £100 plus vat that are still apparently under investigation!

The long and short of it....... they could cost you upto £200 plus vat a month minimum which could be a small ad in the paper so unless you have mone to burn then it is not financially viable unless you are a unique business

1

well done Dean you have sussed them out! you say use them if you have money to burn

tell everyone you know Service Magic are a Con!

Someone will start an email soon that you have to send on to 10 people you know to keep up the good luck etc to stop people being scammed by them

Service Magic are a Con!

I have just tried accessing thier terms and conditions but there is no downloadable link to this and they have never sent me them.

The link they sent me initially expires once you have been accepted so you dont actually get a copy to keep.

I think this is in breach of the advertising standards as there has to be a cooling off period of 14 days from a signed(manually or digitally) contract.

I have just had Touch Local investigated by Trading Standards and they are reveiwing thier practises so maybe its time for Service Magics come-uppance!

Any one who would like to email me with thier own factual compaints please feel free extremeclean@hotmail.co.uk Please make it clear and concise (no little comments like "they are shit" as these, although possibly true, cannot be used in evidence).

I dont think that any of us will get our money back, however as decent tradesmen ourselves we can hopefully protect others and maybe, just maybe Service Magic may alter the way they work.

As I said before, if their bad lead reporting issue was sorted then it wouldnt be such a bad website.

I've read the posts but only having been a member of Service Magic for a few months.

Trust me, if I had investigated them before I definatley wouldnt have joined.

Ironically having emailed them that i dont want anything more to do with them until all my bad leads were sorted........I got a lead sent through!

They only read what they want and I warn people to stay clear!

So it looks like that we all agree that Service Magic are not so Magic after all and the advice is, BE WARNED you use them at a cost and the cost will be on YOU !!!! and a big thumbs up for FREEINDEX

service magic are a call center ripping people off and if you work for them you wont get paid a bunch ov cowboys. AS SEEN ON WATCH DOG 3 YEARS AGO

1

Just to add I hear that Rated People are paying members to get feedback as they say they want to improve their service mmmmmmmmmmmm Here is my view in this tough economical climate they are struggling and I suspect they or Service Magic or some other mob with the same business model will fold before the end of the year.

Also with Freeindex you have to put the work in ie improve your site get your links sorted etc

1

well here we are 2012 !

this post about Service Magic Has been read over 6.140 times !!

Just wondering are they still in business ? or has the power of social networking shut them down !

I'm a gas engineer who has used other lead gererating sites with some sucess, but service magic are rubbish. Their leads are not checked, I've just paid £27 for a lead of a customer who wants a boiler in a house she has not bought yet! This is not the first time, out of 7 purchased leads I have visited 2. One of those was for a chap who wanted it in 6 months, and service magic knew this because it said 6 months on his details. They do not check the details, so anyone who just casually fills in their form will be sold to you. One lead the phone number was dead, one lead the phone number was foriegn. Waste of money, and I don't like their attitude on the phone, all salesmen, mostly with american accents, I've cancelled my credit card with them.......please please don't use. I've had sucess with rated people....alot more professional. An Honest British Plumber

hi,

im new here so bear with me on this,

now i am in the aerial installation business and i have used service magic for around 3 years, i pay £7 per leed and i know that is steep BUT i do get minimum 7 out of 10 jobs.

if there is a customer just wanting advice or any other useless reason then most of the time i will get credited on my account.

im sorry bnut i have no idea what this £200 credit is, maybe its to do with the industry you are in as different industries work different with them?

so as far as an aerial installation business point of view, it works for me

I'd never say never! The consumer is being pushed to the likes of RatedPeople, Check-a-trade, Approved Index. And I'm sure there are others. As a small business providing bespoke fitted wardrobes I have to advertise where people are looking. Whether that's Google, Directory sites like freeindex, yell, etc. The downside with sites like the one you mentioned is the quality of the leads. Most of these companies charge you to be in their directory/ charge per lead, but at the end of the day in ths economy we have to be competitive and chase every lead.

I gave Service Magic a go last year. At first the leads were not bad then they became terrible. I called them about it and clarified the kind of work I do and the area and the result was no change. Still sent me pathetic unqualified leads. I paused the service for a couple of months. Then after a chat with some sales guy reiterating my concerns I was assured the service would get better. The service changed, it got even worse. Leads were poor, unqualified with no way for a return on investment. On the back of a text for a fence installation I travelled 14 miles round trip for a woman who wanted one panel! I cancelled the service then the debacle started. They even told me they can't qualify the leads. I was told by some guy there I would be credited for the outstanding leads. Then was chased for the money. Then I was told that replacing a panel was fence installation not fence repair so that is chargeable. I refused to pay and was told my account had been cancelled. Then I was told my account had been suspended and I owed them an additional £40 for charges ontop of the outstanding balance as per clause blah blah in their T&Cs which I dont recall ever seeing, signing, agreeing too. The most awful lead generator out there. Avoid like the plague.

0

I fell in to the service magic web! I asked for the minimum leads per week within a 35mile area which was 3. I received 8 out of the 8 two didn't own the properties in question One had not even gone to planning, two were outside the 35 mile area, one was selling their property one got my details from another website and one was only thinking about it . Alarmed about the quality of the leads I contacted SM they claim that all the leads were of quality and value. I went to the bank to put a block on any withdrawals from SM. They still managed to withdraw payment, so I contacted the fraud department of the bank who managed to get a refund for me. Through out the process SM refused to contact me in writing via email/post. They constantly were phoning me which I refused to answer because i wanted every thing in writing. In essence do not go near Service Magic they are nothing more than conmen who promise you everything and deliver nothing!!

1

Hi All Found you following a quick search into this Company today, after being Cold Called followed by an e.mail which then followed 2 work leads both quite a distance away. Thank you for taking the time to write about Service Magic I won't be cast under any kind of spell they may send my way, I use the general rule of trust no one now a day's until full research has been carried out, which is really sad.

1

As a plumber and heating engineer I have started to use the Internet as an avenue to find New work and customers. I'm pleased I found this post, because I just had the full pitch from servicemagic today, and although I was already dubious, this has helped my decision. Trying to get seen online without a lot of money is difficult. It takes a lot of time and patience, and should be a long term strategy for any business but these companies know this, and how difficult it is to get work all the time, and to get internet prominence of your own account, and they prey on this by promising work, taking your HARD Earned cash and providing little of value in return. Very unfortunate.

0

Best thing to do when companies like this phone you save their number under Scam 1 then 2 and so on . Funny thing is they probably got your number from Freeindex lol.

My view is this country got into its current state as Sales consumed companies who otherwise would have been steady and secure instead we are now seeing it unravel . Don't get me wrong sales has its place but Joe Public is getting wise to these what I call middle men companies

Service Magic appears to me to be a fraudulent enterprise. I used them to source a roofer. He (of JC Home Imrovements, Cardiff, UK) completely botched the job and the leak was worse after he left than before. I tried to contact the roofer but he wasn't interested in fixing the job or refunding my money. I attempted to leave negative feedback on the ServiceMagic website but this didn't appear. I attempted to contact ServiceMagic to resolve this but they didn't get back to me. It seems that the contractors listed on the site only have positive feedback listed, seemingly because the contractors pay to be members of the site and would probably leave if they received any negative feedback. So in summary homeowners BEWARE of ServiceMagic!!

3

why would you go threw a call center anyway.? if your any good there is plenty ov work we are 3 days behind that busy if you do good work people pass your name around. graham.t lynx-locks .co.uk

1

I joined for three days and they sent a lead for a job to change a ball valve and charged £18 for said lead. This should not have been costed any higher than £6 max. How on earth are we meant to turn any profit when leads are costing such exorbitant amounts. Complete madness. No longer a trader with service magic.

The one thing I noticed about Service Magic is that you cannot even unsubscribe from thier email list. There is no link anywhere to do this. Most genuine companies accommodate for this . Not a good sign. I never used them, I just registered and when I emailed them to ask what was in it for them, all I got was another email asking me to call a certain number. I can smell a rat like the next person so I did not bother. Three months down the line I am still getting leads that I don't want and don't follow up but i still can not unsubscribe.
