Yes, if only every business had an electronic database, or at least a spreadsheet with all their customers' details on.
From my experience, many small / owner managed businesses struggle to keep those records up to date, and often there is very little time or money for sales & marketing.
It's not a simple subject either, unless you are a natural analist and communicator.
The 'Marketing for Dummies' (link) books can be very useful to help improve that side of the business.
I found them easy to read, funny and great to pass-on to other interested people.
