Hi Tim

You seem to have lots of competition in your area.

If you are serious about finding new customers, especially those who search Google for your services, you will need to do some homework (market research), and improve your website(s).

Do you know who your ideal (landscaping) customer is, and if they are still spending during this recession? If not (on both accounts) find out who is still spending money on their gardens, and on what type of work.

Your log site is slightly better, but also needs more work. I guess that product is very seasonal.

I would recommend that you get someone to help you with your websites and marketing, as it's obviously not working for you.

Tims Landscapes makes me think of a painter. Tims Landscaping or tdlandscaping would be more appropriate, as it contains a word (landscaping) that searchers would actually use to find your kind of services. Where are your testimonials / reviews?

There are many other (related) issues to be addressed.

Good luck

Rgds

Try to improve your websites with search engine optimisation. I would suggest paying an expert to do this initially, but to save money you should learn SEO and try to maintain your websites yourself. I was going to suggest trying other things as well but it seems you are doing this already with the firewood business. If your customers have been happy with your work, ask them to provide reviews. The cold fact is it is tough at the moment and could get tougher for some time. Good luck

Timothy,

Who is your ideal customer? Who is the type of person (or business) that wants what you provide. Forget the general market for the moment.

Start by by being specialised and targeting this ideal customer. Suggestions:-

  1. Set up a niche website dedicated to this ideal customer. Market the website and drive the traffic to your main websites.

  2. Leaflets through the doors of the ideal customer.

  3. Online and offline advertisements aimed at the ideal customer.

Be aware that 'free' has its limitations.

Regards

Andrew

Hi Tim,

Chin up, it's a rough period for us all but it will pass. First, remember people buy from people. If you choose to revamp the websites then ensure they are approachable and 'friendly'. The landscaping website hits me between the eyes as a mini digger hire even though it states landscaping first. Consider a change to 'landscaping & gardens'. There's too much in the list on the front, lose about half.

That said, people always go on about SEO these days so see what people can offer you on that but the very best way of new custom is word of mouth. You get this in a gardening industry by being polite, well turned out (obviously not shirt and tie if you're digging!) and working neatly, tidying at the end of the day. Make sure you always have a good stack of business cards in the van, invoice promptly and reply to enquiries courteously. All sounds pretty straight forward but it can be tough when its all against you.

Have a board made up with your logo and contact details on but ask for permission to put it up outside wherever you're working first; if they say no then smile, be happy about it and say no problem, thanks.

It never hurts to ask your current client toward the end of a job if they wouldn't mind acting as a reference for you. This does two things, if you watch their reaction then you'll know soon enough if you're doing a good job in their eyes and it will get them thinking about who they might be talking to about you. Both good.

When you're on site and the Client appears, take time to have a chat. Talk about the garden as if it were your own lovingly cared for garden, give compliments and advice.

If you haven't already you may want to move into garden maintenance as well, it may be small coin but its still money.

Hi Tim

All good points above - I would also strongly recommend that you have a testimonials page on both sites featuring positive customer reviews. Testimonials are a fantastic way of building trust with potential customers.

Best wishes
