When I set up 20 years ago, I purely targeted the SME market and as such, because I never held any personal information, other than business contact names, I was led to understand there was no need to register.

I've recently started addressing the home market and now wonder if I need to register with the ICO.

I still do not hold any personal information other than basic contact information, i.e. name and telephone number along with, though not always, email address and home address.

I have no need, or desire, to hold any other information.

A possible twist to this is my use of Google Apps. My contact information is held within a Gmail account and consequently, that contact information may be stored on servers located in the USA.

Do I need to register with the ICO?

Hi Alistair,

Your best bet is to visit this site and find out yourself. Registration costs £35 for a year, so not much.

http://www.ico.gov.uk/notify/self/question1.html

I hope this helps.

Thanks,

WLC
