hi there i run a catering company covering almost any event. however despite using various marketing methods i seem to be struggling to gain any real custom

my website is

www.sshcatering.co.uk

we advertise with thomson (paid) yell.com, a few local wedding companies, have used adwords but currently not advertising as budget isnt allowing it at present and of course all the free methods we can think of.

we do have some business but not enough to justify our operation.

if anyone has support or advice to what we can change, do or where we are going wrong i would greatly appreciate it.

Hi Karl,

There are several things you could do and a revamp of your website might help, people like pictures and food yummy.

The reason I am replying to you is that I am a "Member of the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs" yes I know it's a mouthful but have a look at this site "http://www.mentorsme.co.uk/" We mentor people and businesses too help them with our knowledge and contacts to find the the best way forward for them.

Mentors can often help over the phone or other methods of communicant so have a look on there I am sure you'll find some help. Good luck.

the website is currently undergoing maintenance to improve its layout so its more google friendly and we have moved our pictures to a gallery, we found before that there was too much content and people were finding it difficult to pick out what they wanted so we have reduced this accordingly to allow people to see more what we offer as opposed to what we do.

Testimonials are essential for New Customers. If you can provide a number of glowing testimonials to potential clients it will help close the sale.

If possible use a testimonial on all your printed material aswell.

Nice images are also key especially with food - we eat with our eyes. :)

Word of mouth is the best advertising you can get. Maybe come on board with a few local clubs, charities for events and offer them discounted rates. These events always attract numbers and you may see a return on it more then google adwords.

Best of Luck!

Hi Karl

In terms of advertising Google adwords can be a great marketing tool but can get expensive very quickly if not set up right to get the most out of your keywords.

Also I would advise against adwords until your site has been updated, its the old 30 second rule first impressions count.

I would consider putting some images on the home page maybe a slideshow? Can understand having a separate page but I feel you need something on the home page that creates an impact and entices the viewer to delve a little deeper.

ok thats appreciated advice, i shall make sure that during the maintenance something is added into it.

I use a company called names.co.uk to create and host my site, im assuming its easy enough to create a slideshow using something like this?

Apart from your web update, i guess you need to work on your networking as well, spread out the word, get in touch with restaurants, specially new ones with no or relatively small kitchen staff, connect with the right people, have them outsource their work to you in return of benefits.

Hi Karl - not sure how the sitebuilder works at namesco.co.uk, pretty basic feature though adding a slideshow so there should be something on there.

Best regards,

Darren

Hi Karl,

I have followed you on Twitter & can see you are marketing out special offers etc, but have only 3 or 4 followers so far, so these may not be actually doing what you would like them to.

We would be more than happy to help increase your network & more than happy to meet up should you wish.

Social Media is extremely good for generating new business referrals if used correctly.

I will leave it to you to hopefully get in touch

Kind regards

Karin

Karl, don't rely heavily on the website. They are fantastic at giving an impression of the business (I personally found yours to be dark and uninviting but that could just be me) but they are not the be all and end all.

People buy people so you have to wipe your face at numerous events, shows and business clubs. Chambers of commerce, BNI, Rotary... all of these organisations have breakfast meetings etc for you to network in. Work on your selling points and m ake sure you can get them across in conversation clearly and concisely.

You have A LOT of competition so make sure you know what they are up to and their standard of presentation and cuisine. Then beat it.

Hi Karl,

You've got lots of valid suggestions here.

I would say though that doing something with half effort is not always a good idea & may actually be much more effort than its worth.

I personally love the competitions you are running & know that there are hundreds of potential entrants who will never see them as sadly they are not being marketed out.

For Social media to work for you, once they are marketed out (Twitter/Facebook) you would need to capture the entrants details & here is your new database of potential users/customers/referrers.

However if the effort isn't put into the social media - it doesn't make sense to offer such great promotions.

I'm not criticising, just offering my professional opinion.

Many people give up on things or don't try things that they don't understand (Personally I couldn't cook a hog roast & wont ever try) However if I need someone to cook one, I will call a professional such as yourself (However I would probably ask my contacts on twitter for their recommendations first).

I'm not touting for business, I'm just suggesting that if you don't really want to invest in the Social Media avenue, you would be better off investing in the other avenues, such as fayres/meetings etc. all talked about on this forum & leaving the social media for now, as small amounts of followers/interaction can be off putting & counter-productive sadly.

I hope I have explained this in a helpful way.

Kindest regards

& Best Wishes

Karin
