The History of FreeIndex

FreeIndex.co.uk was founded in 2003 by Martin Turner a web developer from Bristol who noticed that it cost a fortune for small businesses to advertise their products and services.

Having previously designed several content management systems, Martin had the idea to develop a platform which would allow all UK businesses, regardless of their size or budget, to advertise their products and services for FREE.


In 2005, Martin's old pal - Stephen Bradley - a talented Software Engineer became a partner in the project and that partnership lives on today.

From humble beginnings, with many late nights in a garden shed, FreeIndex has grown into an invaluable tool for over 380,000 UK businesses and over 1.5 million consumers who use the site every month. Our free Quote Request service alone conservatively generates around £2,000,000 of new business for our members every month.

Continuous development has been absolutely key to the site's success, and with no sales staff, advances have been based entirely on having a market leading product and word of mouth.

The FreeIndex team is now 5 strong and we have permanent offices in Bristol. The business is entirely owned and operated by the directors and has no external funding or debts.


The internet is constantly changing, but the philosophy at FreeIndex hasn't. We strive to provide small businesses and SMEs with a fair, free advertising platform and endeavour to provide consumers with the best information out there.
