Based in Luxembourg and founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, Skype is proprietary peer-to-peer Internet telephony (VoIP) that enables users to call other Skype users anywhere in the world for free.
In 2005, Ebay bought Skype Technologies for a staggering $2.6 billion buyout - and despite security questions about whether the software is safe to use inside corporations, Skype is currently available in 27 languages and continues to grow in popularity.
